Rough neck - need some advice

I need some advice.

I have just bought an Epiphone Ultra II for an extremely good price. It has one flaw which is that the finish on the neck (red satin) is fairly rough. It has quite a few little paint spots which are not really noticeable to the eye but can be felt when playing.

What is the best way to get rid of them. If I sand them down using the smoothest sandpaper or a dremel will it take the rest of the finish with it?

I'd say steel wool but be careful to tape off your pickups before you do that. A scotch brite pad might work. Less is more in the abrasives-on-your-guitar department.

Use very fine sanding paper, like 1000 or finer, only sand the spots that bother you, and use a buffing compound to polish the whole neck (so it has the same feel everywhere), and you're back in business. With fine sanding paper you only sand off a very thin layer, no need to worry about that.
