Slash got it right. I'll agree with IM4Tone that a single line rendition lacks a bit - after all chords are possible with a guitar.

Thanks for pointing out the hat removal for the anthem angle - that makes sense. For me, the reasons I dislike the Santana version are more about the tempo, the spastic phrasing, and the overall odd approach than the tone. The tone definitely was not close to his usual standard either, and I don't think you can blame that entirely on the venue (as Slash also demonstrated).

Seems like thats the case every time he plays the anthem... admittedly his tone was better this time around (his last NA performance someone linked on here was even worse). The owner of Bludo must dread these. LOL

This might literally be the only time I've heard this pulled off well; thanks for sharing.

I didn’t enjoy his performance. More importantly, the game was very good!

Listening to Aqua Marine and some Banana OG in one hand, an ice cold lager in the other hand on a beach in Costa Rica sounds good right now. Real good.

Man, I like Santana and already had the pleasure to see him live, but this sounds almost like these shred videos lol...

Just get LeBron to play it. And run the scoreboard and sell the refreshment, drive the team bus, etc.

Far be it for me to critique Carlos but I've never heard a national anthem from him where the amp being used didn't mimic a transistor radio from the 70's. That tone from a few days ago was just awful. I honestly believe if they had mic'd a 10-inch Boogie Subway Blues it would have been an improvement....or even better, had he just performed it acoustically. Nonetheless, hard to improve on this one. My all-time favorite.

EJ did something with the song, respected its harmony and injected his signature style with deference to Jimi.

    Cool.

Can someone please tell Santana that his tone with PRS is f'ing horrible and that he needs to go back to playing an SG or at least the Yamahas he used to play. He hasn't sounded good since the early 80s, BEFORE PRS.

Agreed, it was flat out awful. I did like Metallica's version, though.

Haha, ask Joe Bonamassa or John Mayer about that.

As for Santana, after reading all these comments I finally went back and listened to the performance in question. Honestly, compared to a lot of these trashy divas who usually sing it with about 12,435 more notes than actually exist in the song, Santana's performance wasn't that bad.
