What a terrific show! To be honest, all I own of hers is the "Wrecking Ball" album that she did w/ Daniel Lanois - which is a fantastic album. As for her catalog I must admit for some reason I just never went looking into it (not sure why really). Anyways, my wife was able to get free tickets through a friend of ours who is a local DJ, plus we got meet n' greet passes.
As for the show... I was blown away by the power of her voice. It was huge, rich and booming (great acoustics in the theatre she played in) but at the same time incredibly gentle/graceful. Her band was super top notch, with most of the guys switching between several instruments. Her guitarist, who's name escapes me, was flat out awesome. He played a Tele and a Gretsch thru a silverface Deluxe Reverb. Cool faux pedal steel/atomospheric Lanois-esqe textural playing with TONS of feel. Just great!
The meet and greet was actually very nice and intimate. I imagined it would be her sitting at a table with folks lined up for a quick autograph. Instead we went backstage and hung out in a room with her and her 2 dogs. There was probably 20 or so folks there. We got a great pic w/ me and the Wife sitting with Emmylou and her dogs. The next day her "people" emailed a few to us. We got to chat for a few and she was very down to earth, warm and friendly. Nice to met someone with her accomplishments remain grounded and gracious.
All in all it was a wonderful night. And to think when I heard she was coming to town I wasn't planning on going.... boy would I have missed out! I really need to start getting more of her stuff. The material from the new albumd that she played was really, really good live so I think I'll be picking that up soon.
