Saw Krantz in Nashville

Mind blown... Serious explorations of what's rhythmically possible, tonally possible, and functionally impossible...

Just when you think it couldn't get anymore intense, Keith Carlock would take it up another notch...

Nate Wood played some really quirky bass lines and also sat the bass down and got behind a second drum kit... then, he picked the bass back up and played bass and drums at the same time... talk about poly rhythms!

The band was loose and tight at the same time... Krantz would cue them with simple words like "Half" and they would immediately cut the breakneck pace to standard time... nice and easy... Krantz has no problem ripping your brain in half with a line that "shouldn't belong" in a tune... somehow he makes it fit into the impossible drum onslaught that Carlock lays down...

Krantz was awesome and so syncopated... nothing played static... his guitar sounded like it was about to explode(in the good way!) He played the black Tyler with the Electrical Tape covering part of the logo... Hilarious!!! :spit
Delicious cleans and f***'d up moogerfooger goodness all set long...

They played a lot of tunes off Highway 61, although they were completely rewritten for the trio... vocals were buried in the mix and hardly audible... but, of course, vocal content only made up about 5% of the entire show... so no big deal... Wayne was really cool and so comfortable on stage in the groove... Amazing musician!!!

Does anyone know why he tapes off the rest of the tyler logo?

Because its the ugliest logo ever on a guitar headstock. That's the reason. Wayne said it was distracting to him. I can't stand it either. Why does it need to say James Tyler 10 times? Put TYLER on it and be done.

I would take a band saw to it. The logo isn't half as obnoxious as the actual headstock shape.

How was the crowd? I thought it might be sold out, but couldn't make it anyway.
no where near sold out but very decent sized, I thought, for a jazz, funk, fusion player in Nashville:bow

I didn't do a head count but most of the tables were full. The crowd was into it and the band was very appreciative of the support.

I read somewhere he was covering the logo for a different reason. Will try to dig it up.

The little people who live under the stairs told him to cover it up... they also told him his tunes might sound "spot on" if he would invest in a moogerfooger... smart little buggers!

Quoting a post from the HRI forum:

"Just a note from Jim on this.

There is no official "Signature Model" as of yet but Wayne has been playing a Studio Elite for a while.

This doesn't mean there WON'T be one down the road...but currently what you are seeing is Wayne's take on an SE.....and yes...it's got duct tape.....Jim says Wayne thought all those Tyler Logo's were distracting....and Jim said "like black tape isn't?"

I don't mean to hijack -or derail- the thread or anything like that, but just to clarify: there is (or was) a WK Tyler "Edition", I don;t know about a "Signature" model or if there is a difference between the two.

These pix are from James Tyler's facebook page, during NAMM, January 2011.

In the photo someone posted it looks like a strip of Velcro... maybe it has some other purpose other than covering up the logo?

I'm going to see him on Sunday in San Francisco... really looking forward to it. Haven't seen him since 1999 - well, aside from meeting him on a plane once, but he wasn't playing then :)

He's said he covers it up because he doesn't like how it looks. Simple as that. I can see why, too. Those Tyler headstock logos are tacky as hell.

I think the fact that they bother so many people make them that much more awesome... Check out the beauty!

:spit. You like tacky designs. Good for you.
Tacky could be considered an element but I just like design... period.... All kinds... good, bad... sometimes interesting is bad and sometimes bad is good. Much like our quest for "tone" is all subjective...

I can listen to Wes Montgomery or Fred Frith... both completely different yet equally valid to my ears...

Fair enough. I have a different perspective. I can't pretend to like something that I think looks tacky.

So you got to go. I'm glad you enjoyed the show. He's an amazing musician. I have often wondered what Krantz and S. Henderson would sound like on stage together. Now that would be a show!
