Saw ZZ Top last night

Was blessed by the Reverend last night. :bow They played the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood Florida last night.

Fun set played all the standards and added a cool rendition of Jeff Becks "aint superstitious".

He played this one Tele most of the night , switching to a LP once for some slide and then another Tele for the encore. Of course the Fuzzy guitars for "sharp dressed man". Small wall of Magnatones behind him.

To say its been weight relieved is and understatement! :huh

Billy has had so many Custom guitars over the years. I'd love to see a walk through his vault.

How were the band overall, OP?
Great. Tight, the sound quality was excellent. Billy was laid back , his licks had less but more if you know what I mean. I just love Billy's tone and economy of playing. I did kind of wish he played more guitars though. He has so many cool guitars to just see him play that one for like 20 songs was the only disappointing part.

Bands need to know when to hang it up, and I think it's ZZ Top's time.
IN ZZ's defense I had these tickets from last year before the Pandemic. This was a rescheduled event. For all we know this guy could be filling in on shows they were previously promised and they may just call it a day. Billy has been doing a bunch of solo recordings .
I don't see them recording anymore but who knows. :dunno

Great!

Would love to see them, but I wonder if they'll ever visit the UK again.

Elwood plays with a pic in the videos I’ve seen (and I would probably have to as well covering Dusty’s bass all night), did it compliment the songs without distraction?

A world tour? That would probaly have to be to support a new album. Not sure they have that in them....but who knows? Dusty personally picked his replacement so that could mean alot of things or not.

Does it still work that way? I thought these days all the money was in touring large venues, hence if anything albums supported touring :)

I guess my thinking was more that, given the age of some of the band members, they might have decided they are done with the hassle of international travel and looking for a nice Vegas residency to see out their twilight years (which I could fully appreciate!).

Anyway, interesting to read your review - sounds like a show worth seeing if the opportunity does ever arise!

I see your government is now allowing us Brits back into your country, so maybe I'll travel to see the band :D

Maybe Billy's new tech isn't up to speed yet to facilitate guitar swaps with a Rick Neilsen like frequency since his tech of many years (decades?) is now the bass player?

I'd wager a large sum that the pilot lights are the only things in those Magnatones that are receiving electricity.

I heard him say once that when he goes to a fly in and fly out, he will only take a couple of guitars, modern reproductions. I think he has done a lot of gigs like that and private events in recent years.

Surprised he’s “only” 71 actually

I believe that anyone with even a passing interest in guitar playing would walk away from seeing Billy Gibbons live with that gnawing feeling of "I've got to practice more or give this up." There are some interesting YouTube videos breaking down how BG's use of myriad chord inversions makes for a very economical style. He makes a lot of music for someone who barely seems to move his fretting fingers. Good for Elwood picking up the mantle after so many years behind the scenes. Met him and BG at a show once. Pleasant, down to earth guys.
