Okay peeps: I've never had one before. What are the easy go to mods/firmware upgrades etc etc for this mutha?

I hear a rumor it was via an MP1 into the imput of a JCM 800. Noisy as hell but all part of the mojo right?

Fun preamps, I'd try it before you think you "need" to mod it. They are very usable stock.

I ran mine that way and it wasn't overly noisy. But I didn't run the gain super high on the ADA. There is gain to spare and the mid gain settings are pretty quiet. Gotta run it in the low input....nice and FAT.


As far as nailing dudes tones....i'm sure there was a lot more to his sound than just the ADA.

That was my preamp of choice in the 80's and early 90's. I loved that thing.

I ran it into the front end of a 77 Marshall Mark II and out to a 4 x 12. It killed!

I love the tones the Pumpkins got out of this.

Is there an amp that can do it on it's own? The higher wattage blackstars have a similar "High gain but not quite metal" vibe going on but they're a bit bleh in comparison, not glassy enough for want of a less pompous descriptor.
