Consult the scrolls, what do they advise?
Press thine ear to ground, distant armoured steps approach
and on wings of raptors, birds of prey
Foretold by oracles, long awaited day
Whispers abroad, rumours of war, a prophecy of old
Trampling vapour under foot
On a dark horse the overlord rides
Bearing sceptre and sword with blade inscribed
in Elvish rune of ancient time
Looking closer, words burn in flame
"2.9 cometh, hail the day!"

2.9 and 3 have been on the horizon for what seems like forever. Is 2.9 actually about to release in the very near future, or is this just a pointless tease? What is actually new about 2.9?

Scuffham forum is down today as they update their website. Could mean an update is on the way.

Forum is down, rest of website is up...

My understanding is 2.9 is a new framework for the existing amp models and effects. 3.0 will revisit the processing of existing amps and effects based on the technology used for the two most recent amp models, the Wayfarer and the Custom '57.

He's mentioned the possibility of bringing the platform to iOS, which I'm hoping for. That would be huge.

If iOS works with low latency, same sound quality and footcontrolable...id consider that the first gigable iOS solution.. imho that's where we are heading anyway...

Next up is powered speakers / (tube) power amps withdigital inputs.

Atomic used to make the Reactor, which was a 50w tube powered speaker for use with pods/modelers.

...wonder how it would sound with an Amplifire?

Without a doubt S-gear is my favourite plugin of all time. Shame the company does not carry the development momentum as the most others do these days. Well... you cannot have everything.
Ideally I would like to see it in a hardware form as well.

I think there's sort of an inherent risk to what a one-person shop can accomplish once a product becomes successful. Fans of the product always have plenty of ideas of what else it should do; and there are financial inducements for the creator to expand out (rumor, based on some comments he made about SHARC processors, is that Mike is spending time trying to produce some kind of hardware version of S-Gear or adapting it to be licensed in some other company's hardware). Mission creep can really halt progress. At this point, 3.0 seems like the VST equivalent of Duke Nukem Forever.

The Scuffham forum is populated these days by handful of really zealous defenders of the product's insanely slow development, but I do feel bad for folks who bought in on the basis of promised upgrades and are discovering slowly that their year of free upgrades is, in fact, a year of zero upgrades.

I still use S Gear.... its not the best of the best, but it has a lot of bread and butter tones

Ditto. Not for leads, but for clean and gritty rhythm tracks, it's in my template for any new project. My hope is that in ten years, when 3.0 comes out, Mike adds some quality drive pedals and maybe an extra gain stage to the Jackal to get it closer to a real Soldano/5150 sound. That would make it a much more well-rounded choice for me. But I still keep it around because the plexi and clean presets are so nice to start with.

I just reinstalled 2.9 and played it for a few minutes. Man, I always forget how good that plugin sounds. The tweed and the Marshall are just killer. The others probably are, too, but not my personal flavor.
