1. The Gear Page is run by musicians for musicians. We listen, we learn and if we misstep we are not afraid to do the right thing. We proposed some changes to the Emporiums. Based on feedback from members, we have decided to not go ahead with those changes. However, it has also highlighted that we need some community input into what is working and what is not working for members here. Primarily focused on the Emporiums, we'd like input on your thoughts about TGP and how things work in the Emporiums for you and how you'd improve them. The discussion thread on the is here!

by way of an unfortunate personal experience... I jammed with a guy (just) once, about 15 years ago, who showed up to my home with a Peavey Rage(?) amp (1x8"? 1x10"?) and a pedal with 'metal' in the name. He had some sort of a whammy bar equipped, Ibanez'y pointy-shaped guitar. The guy was just beyond beginner, and really enthusiastic so I don't want to bag on him, but he sounded like he was playing the guitar through a Norelco razor.

addendum to story: I offered to let him play through one of my 2x12 tube amps. After a bit of that, he actually said to me: "I'd rather play my amp, yours sounds like crap". I didn't say a thing, and didn't invite him back.

A Fuzz Face and Gonkulator might do the trick.

The Fairfield was the first thing that sprang to mind. Or an old Metal Zone through a Peavy Bandit. Different sort of nasty, but definitely nasty.

I think Ring Modulators can sound totally hideous if that helps.

This. Set it to Turbo, roll the knobs all the way up and it might even take flight and sting you.

I have a bunch of uglification units. I really like filter effects for making things pop, like the Dunlop Q-Zone with the level maxed. If you don't have a narrow Q, it really doesn't sound like a wah, it sounds like a broken boost pedal through a Gorilla Amp.

A companion fuzz clone with output gain and mids knob mods (like the Frederic Unpleasant Companion) does a good job for that, too. Totally gross.

Fender FRV-1 tone maxed into a DS-1 tone maxed. The stuff nightmares are made of.

I was going for the same route pretty much. Plugging the guitar through something in a way it's not meant to can be great for this exact thing.

My first distortion was the aux input of a cassette deck through the amplifier part of a ****** turntable into some beat up speakers. "Unpleasant awful beehive tone" would be an understatement.
