Selling MoogerFoogers - sell now or hold?

Hey guys,

So I know most of the time we want to talk more about how we love and use our gear and not so much dollars and cents kind of stuff, but I've come to the decision that I am going to sell 4 MoogerFoogers. Reason being:

1. They sound great but I have considerable overlap (own the MF series pedals amongst other analog gear).
2. They mostly go unused - I occasionally bring them out to compare against others.
3. The prices they're going for now make me feel guilty to leave them unused when I know that money could be better spent in a myriad of other ways (like savings for daughters education etc).

Now it's certainly not that I *need* the money. If I was getting a ton of use out of them, I wouldn't even consider doing this.... but fact is that they're mostly just sitting there.

So my next question - given I'm not in a hurry. If I do want to get my best bang for my buck in selling these, what do people here think of holding onto these for another 2-3 years before selling VS offloading now? I always sell items based on market prices (recent sales, not exhorbant amounts some people ask for only to have it sit for months) but even market prices have raised dramatically since November.

Edit: I should say. Retirement and education funds are all well taken care of. Any funds I make off selling gear usually either go back into gear purchases (it's my play money) OR, I put it towards one of those responsible things - more as a cherry on top cause why not.

I’m no expert, but I would imagine they will only go up in price the longer they have been out of production:dunno so probably just sit on them for a while? (Plus in a couple of years you might be really into them again!)

The peak value is now, IMO, or really two months ago, following a temporary surge in popularity once the news broke that production had stopped. I'm already seeing Ring Mods and LPFs back down to normal used prices.

They're cool effects, no doubt, but the size alone renders them useless for most guitarists, so that leaves synth people, which is a much much smaller group, and then the prices being what they are makes for a pretty small population of potential buyers.

Cash out now if you want max value, but unless it's particularly good prices I bet they won't even sell fast now.

I’d list them with the patience and supposition that you might not sell them for the price your visualizing, and that you may end up holding them for a few more years. Saving for retirement and kids education should always come before GAS.

Im hanging onto my 108m forever and maybe if the price on the 102 ever goes up i could consider selling it.

If you have a 108 or 104, id say hold onto that **** because the parts theyre made from dont exist anymore afaik and they are really special and cool.

I've been monitoring MoogerFooger prices daily on Reverb since Moog announced the discontinuation. They have definitely ebbed and flowed. It totally depends on what you have.

The MF101, 102, and 103 are the most common and had an exceptionally long production run. After a short spike, these prices have generally stabilized. The Ring Mod and the Low Pass Filter are back to reasonable levels: $200-300 used. The Phasers are still commanding somewhat higher prices: $400-600.

The MF 105, MF 107, and MF 108 all had much shorter production runs and are comparatively rare. These prices have continued to rise. The Cluster Flux and the MIDI MuRF are now fetching over $1000 dollars (less for common MuRFs). The Freqbox prices are also inflated but generally less competitive ($500-600).

The vaunted MF 104, despite its near mythic status, had a longer production run and the prices have remained steady at about $1000-1500 depending on condition.

My assumption is that the current prices will probably hold steady for the next year or so. Because it's Moog, there will always be collectors out there willing to shell out good money for these units, but there seems to be about a $1500 ceiling for pedals in general.

*Edit: what has considerably slowed are the sell times. When Moog first announced the discontinuation, Freqboxes and MuRFs were going up and selling within 24 hours regardless of condition. Now it seems that buyers are a little less desperate and a little more choosy.

Keep 'em. Look after 'em. One day, when you croak, your daughter will have a set of highly prized, vintage gear in good condition. Could be worth a tidy sum.

Unless, of course, everyone loses interest in music entirely and just goes for direct current stimulation. In which case, we're all ****ed anyhow so it won't matter. :D

Something else to note. If Moog moves into Eurorack, it's possible that a lot of these pedals will be folded into rack units in some capacity. If that happens, the Foogers might diminish in value. I know I'd think twice about buying another MF104 if I knew a delay rack unit was on the way.

I'd sell 2-3 and keep a couple (at least one). If you have the Cluster Flux, I'd recommend keeping that. It's the best Flanger ever made (more than a Flanger) and I really regret selling mine.

Outside of some people who love the Moogerfooger Delay and the Minifooger Drive, I've never heard anyone say that a Moogerfooger (or Minifooger) are an essential part of their rig.

Anyone here have an always-on Moog?

Yup. Moog MF Boost is pretty much always on, wether as a boost or aa volum pedal with the expression pedal connected.

If you don't value them musically I'm not sure why you're thinking twice.

[I sell everything I don't use or expect to use.]

Because I've seen them skyrocket in price in the last year alone, and they were recently discontinued. 2 + 2 says their availability will only get more scarce as time goes on.

Didn’t you broker tell you not to time the market?
If you use a broker than you're most likely paying more than me in fees lol. I kid, but I know what you're saying yes. Investment wise (retirement and things) it's all regular contributions to ETF's in a self managed trade account. Low fee and no playing around. But that's real life, serious business. This gear stuff is what I do when the rest is taken care of, so it's all a bit of fun.

Haven't you ever heard a story that goes like this?

"When I was a kid I had these comics that would be worth a fortune now, but my mom threw them out when I turned 14". Or something similar?

Part of me just doesn't want to be the guy to sell too early only to see it double in value again in 3 years.
