Anyone know anything about a Gibson SG, satin type finish (faded) with moon inlays? What's it worth? Is it a custom guitar? A player-endorsed model???

I can't remember the name of this model. It's not a custom job. A friend of mine has one. It's basically a faded SG special with moon inlays they came out with a few years back. Probably not worth much more than a regular faded special.

I had one a couple years ago 2003-2004. They were selling new for $699. I got mine from GC for $450.

I think what you are referring to is the first run of SG Special Fadeds. They had both ebony boards and crescent inlays with a choice of "brown" or "red" finish. For a short while they went to ebony and dot inlays and today they are the standard rosewood/dots. There was also a Goth model that was matte black w/ebony board and had a single crescent inlay at the twelfth fret.

Here is a pic of my SG Special Faded (ebony board/crescent inlays):

I think mine (2002) plays and sounds great. I've played some that I thought were dogs, too. Try before you buy is always good advice, IMO, if that's possible.

The tone is pretty much the same as any SG Special. How do they play? Well imagine a SG Special with a matte finish.

Personally, I really like the feel of the matte finish as it feels like a well worn guitar. Others I have heard from don't seem to care for it.

It really is your call on how it "feels".
