one of my friends made the 2 sound samples.
one is from an expensive guitar, but the other one is way~ cheaper.

anyway, i became to wonder... which do u prefer?
i'll let u know the exact guitar models a few days later.

    plz vote !!
    here are the sounds.

    sample #1

    sample #2
    [SOUNDCLOUD]https://soundcloud.com/user459845323/shootout-2[/SOUNDCLOUD]

    ------------ ADDED ------

the set-ups for the both guitars (such as the pickup heights and the strings) are the same.
the amp is a fender. but don't know the exact model name.
the player used a tube screamer on the both recording.

they are both Strat style guitars with the same wood combinations.

    they are 2 different guitars.
i am not gonna cheat u guys.

it is natural that sometimes the sound from the cheaper one is better for someone.
just wonder which sound is preferred among the samples.

    ---------------- ADDED ---------------------------

i don't want to continue this vote tooooooo long.
here is the answer and the result.

They both sound like crap to me. Ha!
The ham fisted playing will make pretty much any guitar sound the same.

    Sorry. :D

In all fairness, you should try to get a better recording of both guitars. Both sounded very thin. I need to hear more of how the amp is reacting to the guitars. The amp volume was way too low.

are they the same type of guitar just a price difference or they entirely different guitars? You just say cheap vs expensive...that could be a Squier Strat vs a Gibson Les Paul.

In his defense (as I imagine his playing is just fine) the song sorta lends itself to ham-fistedness, as do several other offerings from RHCP.

The first one has a hollower sound which i prefer for that type of song ,the second one sounds more solid in a bad way and kinda chocked but it could be the playing.
    I voted the first.

First sounds like a better setup. Brighter/fuller tone.

Second sounds like it's buzzing and it sounds cheap.

Could have been the same guitar. The attack in the first clip sounds harder than in the second, and by harder, I mean it sounds like he was hitting the strings harder.

#1 for me... And let me say that I thought the playing was really good, recording was just fine as well. I think a lot of folks are TERRIFIED at the thought that they may have to choose based on how a guitar SOUNDS vs its price or brand lol....

A good follow up? After the results, pop THE SAME pickups from the expensive one into the cheaper one... Then post it. That'll really send folks into a tizzy LOL

I picked the first one also, but the second recording didn't start off at the same volume as the first and after a few seconds it sounds like he started off hitting the strings lighter or raised the volume a bit which made it a bit more confusing as the sound got louder but not as full as the first example. Keeping it real your friend basically sounded like himself on both with that little riff and even if they were mixed with one guitar going into the other, I honestly wouldn't of even noticed the guitars changed. The guitars could be a Squire and US Strat Deluxe, whichever one floats your boat is the right one for you.

I picked sample 2 but wow. Both were pretty horrible at least to my ears. Lesser of two evils in this case. Maybe a better recording next time. I hope that's not the way it sounded in the room.

Exactly. Not that it's any kind of big revelation, I'm going to bet that the pickups/electronics are the biggest factor in the sound difference here. The first sounds fatter to me, but it's a little muddy. The second actually sounds like there's more clarity, but thinner. This actually reminds me of of when I switched out the stock pickups in my Les Paul Studio and replaced them with Antiquities. The stock 498T had a fatter sound than the Antiquities, but it was muddy as all hell. The Antiquity had so much more clarity, but I sacrificed some of the fatness.

I think with some EQ tweakage to boost the mids a bit I might have gone for #2, but as is I vote #1.

And I also did not find the playing to be bad at all. The playing sounded good to me. The recording on the other hand could use a little work to provide a better comparison.

I don't know, they both sound stratty and in the same ballpark despite the obvious differences. I could see the difference being simply different mics, mic placement and/or EQing. I'm not sure I like one significantly more than the other. I guess #1?

For what it's worth, I honestly choose guitars more for how they play than how they sound. Tone is a factor, but the array of what constitutes "good" tone is very broad and easily tweakable. A guitar that melts into my hands and doesn't let me put it down... now that's a beautiful thing, regardless whether it's cheap or expensive or somewhere in between.
