Simple question. Not loaded. I am not talking about hard words I am talking about really simple stuff.

    What say you?

Ok maybe I needed to give more info. This person Teaches English along with other subjects. A Math Teacher doesn't have to spell great. Now if she cant explain Math that's a whole other thing.

Also some spelling issues can be age related. I catch myself all the time and it's getting worse as the years go by.

You mean stuff like 'alot' (sic) ?
Ask what she thinks when she sees a word written in a way that is different to hers.
Does she recognize the discrepancy at all?
If she does, does she assume that the other person is wrong, even in respectable journals?
Does she simply not care enough to question herself or verify the source?
I'm trying to figure out how these trends grow.

My Grammar is ridiculously bad. My spelling however is pretty good. Being someone who won spelling bees as a child and prides himself on being able to spell, that stuff just irks me when I see it. My children by the way are all great at spelling.

I say teachers who can't spell should be suspended until they
can prove they know how to spell. I don't care what they are
    teaching either.

In the end, all that really matters is getting the degree that allows one to get the job. Whatever you may think of that person's ability to spell, is irrelevant.

I had to do some statistical audits of public K-12 classes for a report to the state legislature. I interacted with a number of teachers who were borderline or functionally illiterate. They were very nice, caring, well meaning people, but imprinting on their students their own limitations.

She wouldn't notice a spelling mistake and only seems to care if it's an important document that will be judged. If she sees a word spelled differently she'd probably automatically think that way is correct because she knows she sucks at spelling.

Well she has a Masters in Mathematics and I think her lowest mark throughout the entire thing was 95%. She's smarter than the average bear but just doesn't care about spelling. I think it's embarrassing but I can't keep up with her math abilities so.......

Is the truth funny, or is that just a pseudobulbar issue?

Agreed. I can't express how much I agree with this.

People who can't spell usually haven't done much reading.

    Reading is absolutely essential.
