Should I, Record Vocals through HD500 or standalone interface?

Got a iMac last night. Now I need to get a mic, and stand and perhaps a pop filter. Is the HD500 going to provide decent enough vocals for Demo's or should I go with a dedicated interface, like the Focusrite 2i2?
The Focusrite Scarlet package is intriguing.

Isn't the HD-500 a "guitar" pre-amp/modeler/interface? Probably better off with a dedicated mic pre/interface. Scarlet range looks pretty nice...Focusrite has a good rep. I haven't used it personally.

if you're refering the Line 6 HD500 i would say get away from that as fast as you can.. but thats just me. I hate the sounds most Line 6 products produce (MOST)


For $200 i bought the Presonus Audiobox 22VSL and it came with Studio One Artist software. very good interface for a beginner. another $70 and i got two MXL Condensor mics.. i know its cheap stuff but i am getting decent results..


the first 4 or 5 songs on my soundcloud have been done with this equipment. I dont think im amazing, but i dont think its bad either.

I would look into getting the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. Check Amazon or Sweetwater!!! I know that Amazon has recording packages--they sell a Scarlet 2i2 w/a pair of headphones, and a mic.


If you need a preamp, look into the ART Tube MP. You can grab one for about $40. Great for beginners. I still find myself using it from time to time.

The HD500 has a built in mic input and you can actually do vocals using the HD500 and apply all the effects available to the vocals. It even has a modeled vintage mic-preamp to use if you wanted to replicate the warmer tube sounds.

However the HD500 does not have phantom power, so no condenser mics unless you run a mic amp before the HD500. But you could run a SM58 into the POD and sing away.

The Focusrite stuff looks very good and the package deals are pretty sweet. I think I might go that route. I could still use the HD500 for effects if I wanted, or use VST's. It's a great time to be a musician that is for sure.

You can use the HD 500 as an interface with none of the guitar stuff getting in the way by using a blank patch. No problem. It works fine, but won't phantom power a condensor mike... deal breaker for me.

And... the vintage mike pre in the Hd 500 is really nice.

Or guitars?... Leave the guitar boxes for guitars... You can pick up some great vocal effects (hardware units like Lexicon MPX-1) for around $100 used. All the DAW's these days have plenty of plugins as well...

Get it, but L6 built it for that purpose as well, why the dedicated mic input if the HD500 is not for that purpose.

I do think I am going to go with a Focusrite Package. Thanks for the tips on checking sweetwater and musicianfriend. I didn't even think of bundles.

Even though the HD500 has the ability, I would like to be able use a condenser mic for slightly better recording of vocals.
