I never seem to see any posted in the emporium and wonder sometimes if 1980 is the year that got skipped.
I wanna' buy one eventually (if there are any) because its the year I was born.

    Rock on!

There are plenty of them out there - but for example if you're looking for a Fender you're likely not going to find one with a serial number that translates to "1980". On Strats they used "S9" numbers, which "translate" to "1979" from 1979-1981. On Teles they used "S8" numbers (i.e. 1978) from 1978 through 1982. You'll find "E0" numbers on Lead I and Lead IIs - but they could have been made in 1979 (my '79 Lead II, purchased new in November 1979, has an "E0" serial number - I suspect they came out so late in 1979 they just skipped forward to the 1980 numbers). Because of this unless someone takes it apart you rarely see Strats or Teles advertised as 1980 models - even if they really are.

There were plenty of Gibsons, Ovation, Music Man, Ibanez, Guild, Washburn, Roland synth controllers, and plenty of other makes built in 1980 - I know because I was a real music shop rat that year as it overlaps my senior year of high school and start of college. I think the first G&Ls came out that year as well.

The Ibanez is from 1980. The others are mid to late 1980s.

The best strat I've ever played (and I've played 60's, 70's versions, even recorded with them) was a 1980 strat. It's weird cause people say 79" was the worst year for strats but then early eighties are held in high regard. Most unique neck and "whole" feeling strat I've ever had the chance to play. Yeah I don't see them around either, n don't know why...

    have a mid80s Quest atak 2.
got it for $190 with ohsc.

I swapped the HBs would lipsticks.

also have owned an Aria Thor Sound 600, Hondo strat, El Degas tele and I have a Peavey T15.

everything I toucch from the 80s seems to be the best quality compared to anything 90s and younger.

what differences in building guitar have changed over the decades?
what happened then that's not happening now?

second Genesis in the thread, although mine doesn't have the fancy inlays. Great, great guitar, even if most people don't have any idea they ever existed.
