For me, I found I learn and retain lyrics much better if I never use a lyric sheet in the learning process.

If I start playing/singing the song using a lyric sheet, it takes longer to really know the words and not need it. (Haven’t used one in 10+ years, and when I did, it was only during practices, never live.)

I learn lyrics by listening and singing with the tracks while driving. Currently have about 70+ songs at the ready.

Memorizing lyrics is like learning guitar. It is all about practice and time spent doing. I bet most of us who play guitar in a band practice regularly each week. Ask your singer many hours each week he spends practicing. I bet it is close to zero.

I am singer and guitarist and I spend at least as much time on my singing as I do my guitar playing. I have about 100 song lyrics memorized at any time and I don't have a good memory. Just practice.

And time for memorizing lyrics is easy. It can be in the car, in the shower, while doing a mundane task at work etc.

I went and watched a friends band last week. Lead singer plays rhythm guitar as well. He has everything memorized and as such puts on a great show. Always interacting with crowd. If you are reading off lyrics it looks like crap.

    Singer just lazy.

"I have to memorize my guitar parts. Surely you can memorize your lyrics."

If he wants a pointer, give him this tidbit: walk around singing the damn songs. It works.

I can only remember the first few words to almost every rock song I've liked. I've never been able to remember lyrics. Now that I'm an old man I can't remember many artists names and the songs they've recorded. Thankfully I have a computer a phone and a Kindle to help me out.

I can memorize music without issues but never lyrics. Even lyrics to songs I've heard a million times and listen to regularly and have for decades Always had that issue.

This is me - I never listen to lyrics, I only hear the guitars, bass, drums, chords. People ask me if I know songs by title and I have no idea - but when I hear it I can usually almost play it. I do think memorizing lyrics is harder, but singing the songs repetitiously would work - I never thought of that.

I love that song. but it's a LONG way around the barn.

And what is your role in the band ?

Look ... David Bowie with lyrics on a stand before the iPad was invented.

Lead Singer here. I’ve got over 500 songs on my iPad that I chose from. No way I can remember all of them. I’m also the guitarist. Thankfully I don’t need the music for that.

Also, how old is your singer ?
After 50 you start forgetting stuff. It happens. At this point in my life I’m glad that I can still gig. I can remember some song lyrics btw

Does he stop singing leaving a void? I still forget lines I've written and sang for 25 years. You just go Stipe Mumble and carry the melody until you find your feet.

I mean wouldn’t that be the same as a guitarist who doesn’t practice? If all you do is sing in a band, your one and only job, because god knows you rarely show up to load in... Carl! But yeah, practice those lyrics! It’s not like I can just skip out on all those verse/chorus/bridge/lead changes. Also, there are plenty of singers who DO memorize their lyrics! So do your damn job... Carl!

With the main band, I quit using an iPad because it took up space in front of me, our leader calls out a song 3-5 seconds before we do it, and I just want to reduce the amount of gear any way I can.
With the other two bands I use a Music stand...because alot of the stuff is new to me, and everyone in both bands uses one.

    Carl!

Hendrix was notorious for forgetting lyrics or misplacing verses. Your singer is in good company. ;)

Don't think Hendrix would have had quite the same effect on an Audience if he was using a tablet to read lyrics

Reading lyrics (or chord charts, for that matter) puts one in the mode of following Garmin/TomTom or whatever GPS you choose.

One spends so much time watching the little screen they tend to lose focus on the big picture.

Dump the iPad - they are problematic due to the way so much
information is thrown at us every day on our tablets, iPhones,
    email on computers etc...

I'd recommend he write the lyrics down on a piece of paper. Have
him do that once or twice a week. I remember everything I write
down once - directions - same thing - If I write them down I don't
need to use a GPS and I don't need the directions with me either.

Saw Rush a couple years ago. We had upper bowl seats on the side of the stage.

    Geddy had a TelePrompTer.

    Just saying.
