Can someone help me understand what this is exactly?

I want to add a mild echo/delay effect for leads and arpeggio sections of certain songs and I think a 'slapback' effect is what I'm looking for, but would like better clarity on what it is exactly...

THEN I need to get a delay to produce this effect. I've been considering the Memory Lane but wonder if it'll be overkill. If not (for me it's about getting the right tone) I'll spend the $ for that unit. But if it is in fact overkill (I won't be using any long delay effects) what would you guys suggest? It would have to be analog.

    Thanks! :AOK

I would suggest an Ibanez EM-5 or DL-5 both produce very good slapback for cheap. However neither are analog. The EM-5 is supposed to be more analog sounding (it is to my ears, and it is VERY nice for slapback), BTW in my mind slapback is like the rockabilly mystery train sound.

Think of slapback as the sound of rockabilly... Usually a delay time of 130-150ms, one repeat. Think 'Train I Ride'.

I use a neato cheapo DOD FX96 (the last analog delay they made). Sounds good, kinda sucks some tone, but it's got the same chip as the old Boss and Ibanez pedals.

    Other cool examples are:
Maxon (they have a few great analog delays... AD-9, AD-999, older AD-80)
    older Boss

I'm sure lots of folks'll chime in with their ideas.

Fantastic! What a killer solo to boot!! Thanks bro. :)

So I reckon the Memory Lane would be total overkill, eh?

i've always hated the way slapback sounded until i got my memory lane and tried it for the first time yesterday ... it sounds really great. I'm going to try and record some more clips sometime this week just to show the versatility or the ML.

I would say overkill, although it is a fantastic pedal. Listen to this. It is a bigger video but WELL worth the wait. Some of the BEST danny gatton I have ever heard.

derek, i was using a dl-4 and dd-20 back and forth for about 2 years. let's just say that when i got my memory lane it was a wonderful awakening.

anyways, i will make some more clips for sure. do you want a backing track again? or just straight up memory lane?

    Will do.

And solo/straight up Memory Lane clips would be great!
