    Hi guys,

Firstly I've been on here for years but I've had to change the method I log in with, so I'm not new, but it will look like that.

    ...now back to business -

For small gigs I really like taking a tiny amp which is used as a little monitor for me then having a direct output to the desk.

Any ideas what is the smallest amp this is possible with?

I use a trademark 10 for this which has 8" speaker and XLR emulated output, but if I could go smaller I would - this is particularly in little pubs where I'm getting a reasonable level from an acoustic instrument and just want a bit of extra reinforcement. And if necessary plug into front of house. I'm doing a folk type thing on mandolin (no kit) and it cuts pretty well acoustically - sometimes we're pretty much acoustic in a pub, other times it's a more and we need a bit of reinforcement. Say 100 people. Then if the venue gets bigger, 200+ I want to plug the amp DI into the PA and just use the amp as a monitor.

It seems most mini or micro amps just have a headphone out which then cuts the speaker, which is not useful to me.

So I don't think micro cube can do it. Lunch box Jr maybe with speaker not cut, going through headphone out - but I've no idea how that'd sound in a desk.

Thank you - all help appreciated.

You can use a Suhr Reactive Load IR and use your existing amp with it.

Hughes & Kettner Tubemiester 18 (maybe the 5 watt does as well)

They have a RedBox built in - GREAT DI out.

Now, if you're open to SolidState/Digital, then there's a TON out there.

    Hope this helps!

The Palmer EINS has Direct Out, as far as I remember.
Really nice Little amp. Something Special soundwise. While being a nice Little amp, it also shines as a tube driven preamp / OD in front of a bigger amp.

I've used a 5 watt blackstar (with emulated line out) for this type of setup. Decent sounding amp, and not expensive. Otherwise, just get a Palmer pdi-09 direct box, and you can use any amp you want.

Hmm... I don't know if you're gonna find something smaller than the trademark 10 that has a real Direct out. I mean, it's pretty much designed to do what you're doing with it. Pretty much everything else in that size range and smaller just has a headphone jack, which as you know, cuts off the sound. A lot of the suggestions in this thread will be bigger, heavier, more expensive, etc.

BluGuitar Amp 1 - small footprint, but up to 100-watts of power tube output and will fit on a pedalboard. There is a lineout which can to to a PA but you can still run a speaker cab for monitor.

Another amp I can recommend is the Benson Vinny. It is a 1-watt all tube head with a 1x10 cabinet. It has a line out that you can run to another amp, PA, or recording console. The amp will play through the speaker cabinet even if the line out is connected. The amp has great tone and is responsive to the players style.

i used to use a peavy JSX mini colossal,
5 watt tube amp combo, with tremelo, sounded really really good, and had a compensated cab filter xlr out on it......
recorded it with a 57 on the cone and the cab filter circuit,
    they sounded almost identical.

    i'd find one of those.

Take a look at a Crate Palomino V8. Has an EL84 and a 12AX7 and direct out. I have one that I have used basically for what you are describing. If you have any q's then pm me.

I used a Phil Jones AG100 cub amp for this very purpose. Small yet powerful, easy to use, great amp.

Probably that Suhr lunchbox recording amp. Always wanted one of those. I have a Mesa Subway Rocket that is tons bigger yet still small-ish and has a direct-out...

couldn't you use a DI box like a Palmer PDI03 with any amp that you can unplug the speaker and put the Palmer DI box in line with whatever amp speaker? You can use the DI box of your choice, a Radial, or whatever, I mentioned Palmer because I use one with my amps when we play out - the Palmer PDI03 in the amp-to-speaker path and the Palmer XLR direct out to FOH - I set it on Vintage for an open-back 2X12 cab and it is amazing and sounds great every time.
