I'll have to get a clearer shot...
Nice. Had a rat 2 for a while, got an '87 a year ago...love it!!
How much variation in the sound is there between them?
I've owned two RATs and played a few more. To me they have sounded very similar. I find myself doubting that certain years sound substantially better than others.
Very cool pic.
I owned a couple a while back & one is on my list to aquire again shortly.
They have such a useful range of gain.
that bottom tooth needs to brush
I have 2 versions myself!
Had several Procos and clones over the years. My favorite is the current You Dirty Rat . Awesome box.
Keeley modded Rat II. Awesome.
I love my smallbox RAT
I got a big box RAT. I don't see it ever going anywhere.
Any of you run multiple Rats at the same time? I love my 80's Keeley-modded Rat 2, but I have considered getting a 2nd for lower gain and combined use for extra sustain.
Love to see those collections. Wish I could find some good deals on the "good" Rats, which by most accounts is most of them aside from the recent Chinese-made reissues.
I just moved back over to the Rat this week. I brought it to the job last night and was in heaven. For single coils pickups through a high wattage amp it's absolutely the perfect rock lead pedal. It totally makes you feel like Superman when you're playing through it. My Zendrive clone is now wearing the cone of shame.
Recently sold my Rat 2... would be interested in trying an older one.
I like the Rat a lot. Turbo Rat is great too.
The one in the top left (as you view the pic) is my 1st RAT. I bought it when I was on the road in the 80's. I have played over 5,000 gigs with it. I did have to replace the footswitch about 15 years ago. Anyway, it does seem to have a "smoother" sound than the others (even the other "white face"). Generally I find that they all are close enough to sounding the same that I can sub out any for a weekend and not notice the difference on the gig.
I have 3 (not pictured) Keeley modded RAT II pedals that are each mounted on a pedalboard. They have a bit more bottom end and maybe a little more gain - but I usually don't crank the gain up that much anyhow.
I have used two RAT pedals on the same pedalboard before... one with higher gain, one with lower. I could cascade them and get a really nice sustain as well.
Keeley Modded Big Box! I love it
I love my '86 (same circuit as a whiteface), still unbeaten as OD/Distortion you kick it and you get plenty of harmonics and detail, no mud no losing attack but still warmth and good playin' dynamics, one of best pedals ever made
