After sending Dean some pointed emails he replied that he had had a death in the family and that he's going to start shipping orders "sometime next week."
I have not paid, im waiting on a quote.. Im hooked on these strings (been using for 6 years) and its damn disappointing that he cant run his business properly!
I promise you, if he starts getting his **** together again, people will start buying again. For some reason people think his strings are the greatest thing since sliced bread and they can get screwed and screwed again, they'll just reach for the K-Y and take it one more time for the CHANCE of getting those mystical strings.
Purchased a dozen sets of Snake Oil Brand strings end-of-April 2011 and everything went really well. I placed/paid the order on-line, then called Dean and left a voice-message. He returned my call within a couple hours and he filled my order while we were on the phone. Ya learn a lot about strings from talking with Dean. The order from SOB was on my porch (across the country) in 4 days. Dean is also an encyclopedia on vintage guitars & amps! Snake Oil is a one-person operation run by a guy who is a metallurgist and not an on-line business specialist. He strives to produce a high-quality product in a world of mass-produced crap. So, yes, his family matters effect his one-man operation. No doubt, an unusually long wait can be frustrating, but SOB strings are worth the wait. Note: when I buy, I get a few sets for each guitar and I re-order every 6 months and I don't suffer brain-damage over a wait.
I like Pyramid Strings too, though, they're more expensive. With regular cleaning (with Naptha), Pyramid Strings generally last as long as SOB strings, 4-6 months. Although, I had a Pyramid wound-E string arrive DOA in the last set I got. It happens!
Does anyone know: do these various brands all manufacture their own strings? Do they all have their own special factory? I doubt it, but what you think?
Don't get me wrong I would love try out his strings it's just like everything else he needs to get on the 8 ball and keep with supply and demand and Customer Service.
I used Snake Oil Brand strings for a few years. They are amazing strings. Then two or three years ago I had two different orders that failed to show up within a reasonable time. On both occasions I filed a PayPal dispute just before the time limit to do so and Dean immediately (like the same day) provided a full refund. I decided to use something else (Gibson strings that I usually order from juststrings.com) and never looked back. Probably 99% of our guitar heroes use major brand guitar strings that you can buy at Guitar Center. Think about this the next time you're ordering boutique strings on the web.
What Dean should do is team up with someone who's a respected businessman in the community to handle order fullfillment and concentrate on the manufacturing of the strings.
