    ...a solid-state amp at Woodstock.
The new issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine talks about it.
Carlos sure did get some sweet tone from that amp using his Gibson SG with P-90 pickups.

    UPDATE: 7/25/19

It addresses the point of this thread - spot on! ;)

The amp was made by the guy who makes Gallien-Krueger.
The name on the amp was GMT, a very early design by Robert Gallien. He later joined up with Richard Krueger.
The GMT 226A, if memory serves me correct. 220 watts.
No effects (pedals) were used. He plugged directly into the amp.
According to lore, Santana using 8's on his guitars back then.

Carlos was supposedly tripping during the performance.

Here's a little something regarding the man's gear:

Plenty of great legendary tones made on SS amps.

How many decibels must have that thing been cranking out to get that kind of distortion and sustain from 220 solid state watts?

I guess the price of vintage solid state GMT's will go up now.

And if tone is in the tabs, maybe the price on those will go up too.

That TAB is a nasty drink. I dislike it.

The rhythm section is what catches my ear the most in that performance.

He said he was tripping ferociously (not his idea he was slipped lsd in a drink) and holding the guitar was his only link to reality. Amazing performance made more amazing with the back story. Never guessed it was an SS amp though, but no Boogies in 1969.

Phew! Here was I thinking I'm the only one who thinks Santana is overrated. He usually sounds terrible when I've seen live footage.

If they rate all those hits, that would seem to indicate over-rated isn’t applicable. How do you over-rate somebody who’s been extremely successful at what they do?

I attended two concerts in the 90s and his sound was just huge and incredible.
