Not exactly a prolific poster here but pretty psyched about scoring this amp and thought I'd just see if there's any Cornell love here?....

I'm currently using a Marshall 1987x reissue with the bright cap removed and power scaling added, otherwise stock so despite being familiar with the whole Plexi thing I am expecting the Cornell to be a decent step up in quality.

I was looking to maybe convert my reissue to earlier specs as it is still very gainy and aggressive but saw the Cornell come up used and thought I'd just as well get one that was done right in the first place! Plus the tube rectifier switch is a nice touch.

Anyone with experience with a 45/50 care to comment?

    Cheers. Best,
    Lewis

Thanks guys, I'll make a thread when it gets here and share my thoughts on it vs the 1987x.

I actually spotted a used one here in the UK....it's really a dream amp for me as well and with the price I managed to negotiate for it (under 60% of the new price and it is in nearly NOS condition!), I just had to go for it and ask questions later!

    Now, what to sell.....

Our TGP brother illinimax has a whole stable of Cornell amps. I've played his 45/50. An absolutely "watershed" amp. Stunning tone. Just a great, great amp.

I read about all the other Marshall-type builders through various threads here. Rarely read about Cornell. He's been at it for years and makes some of the best amps on the planet IMHO.

I also had the chance to speak with him on the phone a few years ago when I was in England. Really nice chap, to boot.

It's probably because the American guys on here obviously have much better access to the American builders, a new Cornell is on the pricey side over here so I'd dread to think what they cost state side!

I've heard from a few guys with a fair amount experience saying that the 45/50 is the best 50 watt Plexi they've ever played, including in some cases originals!

It's a shame I never did deal directly with Dennis as I have heard he is a top bloke but I'm afraid you can't argure with an over £800 discount on the used market!

I have a Journeyman head with a 2x12 cab. I wonder if there are any others in the United States. illinimax? There's a review from '96 archived on Denis' website comparing it to a Matchless. Hope to A/B it someday....

Hope the OP is still alive. Hasn't posted since Oct 2015, shortly after creating this thread. Maybe the Cornell electrocuted him?

I have the Cornell Romany Plus for the past 6 or so years loving it. It has full NOS Glass GE 6L6, GE5751 etc. Am toying to switch one of the 5751 to 12AT7, I set it as a 'clean amp' as I run dual amp system with an amp switcher. I love it, it's a desert island amp for me. I pair it with a Mesa RectoV 25 and incoming Reeves Custom10HG. I was thinking of getting the Cornell Plexi 10/18 but decided on the Reeves in the end.

    I used to own a Cornell 45/50.
I thought the amp sounded really nice,....... however, It was smoother, darker and easier on the ears at high levels, and just did't have that raw aggressive snarl & "KRANGGG" of a Vintage Marshall.
