    Word:

Play what you want & let the public pick up on what you doing even if it does take them 15, 20 years.---Thelonious Monk.

Jazz is a music to be played & not to be intellectualized on.---Gerry Mulligan.

I discovered very early that it wasn't quite enough for me to imitate people.---Cecil Taylor.

The most important thing I look for in a musician is whether he knows how to listen.---Duke Ellington.

I'm just amazed that that list of quotations didn't list the most important one of them all, from Sir Duke again:

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity. Charles Mingus

Jimmy Durante, speaking to Louis Armstrong: "Ya know, Pops, between your horn and my schnoz, we done a lot of blowin'!"

FYI: If you don't know Durante's formidable chops on the piano, look him up on YouTube. He began his professional performing career in a brothel and soon became known as "Ragtime Jimmy". The man could definitely swing!
