the Kruger Brothers, with the Kontras Quartet

    Appalachian Concerto

The Appalachian Concerto was composed by Jens Kruger. The Kruger Brothers consist of Jens Kruger, Uwe Kruger and Joel Landsberg. The Kontras Quartet includes Dmitri Pogolerov, François Henkins, Jean Hatmaker and Ai Ishida.

The Appalachian Concerto is a work commissioned by the Ashe County Arts Council as part of their program to bring artists together in creative and collaborative ways, providing Ashe County with new and innovative works based in the arts culture of the region. The work highlights the range of the banjo as a solo instrument and showcases Jens Kruger’s skills as composer and arranger.

Pretty cool stuff...reminds me of the way the New Grass folks were using traditional instruments playing non-traditional music :). Only this goes in the other direction!

I visited Ashe County briefly in the summer on a trip to NC...cool little place!

Gorgeous. I love Eastern European (klezmer, Russian balalaika) music anyway, so there were a lot of familiar tones and phrases happening there. Great stuff!

I've seen them several times, at a folk festival in Goderich, a concert venue in London, and I've got tickets for them in March. Never disappointing, they're great performers, stellar musicianship. Nice guys too.

    Highly recommended.
