Songs that sound cheerful, until you actually listen...

My band just made the decision to shelve this cover. As guitar player, I'd always loved the song, but never really listened to the lyrics until the singer brought it up. Ok....
I never really listened to the lyrics until one night I did it at the karaoke with a friend/date who happened to be a POC. What a fantastic time to realize "brown sugar" may not have been the drugs they were all enjoying.

When you realize it’s about the torture of staying in the closet - but you reveal it to millions through a poppy 80s tune:

I just got your message baby
So sad to see you fade away
What in the world is this feeling
To catch a breath and leave me reeling
It'll get you in the end, its god's revenge
Oh I know I should come clean
But I prefer to deceive
Everyday I walk alone
And pray that god won't see me
I know its wrong, I know its wrong
Tell me why is it I'm digging your scene
I know I'll die baby
They put you in a home to fill in
But I wouldn't call that living
I'm like a boy among men
I'd like a permanent friend
I'd like to think that I was just myself again
Why is it I'm digging your scene
I know I'll die baby
I just got your message baby
So sad to see you fade away
I'm like a boy among men
I'd like a permanent friend
I'd like to think that I was just myself again
Why is it I'm digging your scene
I know I'll die baby
Oh come home baby come on angel

I once heard it suggested that Happy Together is about a fantasy, perhaps unrequited romance and when you listen to it in that vein it becomes downright creepy.

I ran this by a friend who had it on a desert island tracks list and she was quite taken aback and consensus among everyone else was that I was the creepy one. Might be.

Today is the greatest day because he is planning on dying tomorrow. No kidding.
"pink ribbon scars" is a visual metaphor, not emotional.

The One I Love by R.E.M. got a lot of wedding plays in the 90's.

"Y'all don't wanna listen to me...you just wanna dance."

If a guy sang this, it'd be Joey Buttafucco!
