songs with potential that didn't quite make it

I was just listening to Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face". This starts out as a beautiful ballad. It's the sort of thing, early on, that I'd like to have in the background while slow-dancing with a beauty at a dance back in high school. But then... he just ruins it. It gets fired up into some weird quasi-hard rock thing with an overdriven strat. All of a sudden, the song is supposed to be "badass".

Look, if he wanted to change the vibe of the music, at least have a track change corresponding to the massive change in tone of the song.

What other songs had, at some part, potential to be huge, but were then ruined?

I love the intro to Steely Dan's "Dirty Work," but then the singing starts and I feel like the song goes in an entirely different direction than what I was expecting and it turns me off. But I could listen to that first 20 seconds all day:

FWIW, eyes without a face charted higher than White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Dancing with myself...

It was a pretty big hit.
