I'm sure some of you have seen this floating around Facebook. I have to say I'm saddened to see how poorly my fellow countrymen have done in answering the question. Sadder still are the folks that post a wrong answer and then add some snarky comment about how sad it is that kids today can't do simple math. Others still calling people idiots when they don't agree with their wrong answer. I'd like to blame Common Core but plenty of the people I see posting wrong answers are my age and we didn't have that crap when I was growing up.

    50

    PEMDAS

But that wasn't your question. Your question was "how do people get this wrong". Answer:

    Failure to follow PEMDAS.

I dunno if sad is the way Id describe it. Order of operations right?

Thats just not in my daily life. Im sure if it became necessary to do that particular equasion somewhere more important than facebook I and most others could manage it.

    Why do I get 14 ?

EDIT: Ah I see. The division and the multiplication need to be treated separately. Math was definitely never my strong suit. As long as I can count to 4 though, I do pretty well.

Because it has been a disaster. Whether intended or not, the kids are taught tricks and shortcuts to solve problems rather than the fundamentals early on. So many of the kids struggle greatly with advanced math topics because they never learned the fundamentals the "hard" way.

There are different forks in my son's school that basically break down into common core and traditional. In the common core track they don't even call it Algebra or Geometry - they use other generic terms. Why?

The terms and techniques for mathematics have served us for centuries - by not learning those foundational techniques, terms, and rules, kids are not prepared to partake in all the other math material and resources that exist.

Augmenting traditional stuff with new learning is of course a great thing - but that's not what is happening.

No idea what Common Core is but I remember learning basic order of operations in elementary school. Math is pretty simple at that level!

Show me a real life example where this is relevant to those who are not mathematicians nor math teachers.

I did get 50 but it's a pretty meaningless rule unless you're studying for a math test. It's about the equivalent of "what key is Sweet Home Alabamma in?"

    Assuming the parentheses are correct here (7 + (7 / 7) + (7 x 7) - 7) = 50.

Some programming language compilers and calculators would assume different parentheses in the original; resulting in different answers. That's a very real life example. Punch the original into your calculator and see what you get as an answer. Microsoft calculator gives me 56 for an answer.
