Any recommendations for speaker cables? I really don't know what to look for. I've been using some cheap $8 off the shelf Horizon (or something of equal cheapness) speaker cable for a year or so and thought that it might be worthwhile to upgrade. What should I look for?

Well, I typed in speaker cable and I really didn't come up with any threads specifically about speaker cables. I'll try again.

What's the deal with the guage of cable or whatever?

Try this search. I just bought a bunch of Bayou. Butch is great to deal with, and his cables are very well made. I love the instrument cables but have not tried my new speaker lines yet. I bought them for a custom rig that I'm still waiting for.

Got an old vacuum cleaner around? Cut off the appropriate length of its power cord and solder some good 1/4" plugs to it. To my ear, these "pre-conditioned" cables make the best speaker cables for guitar amps....and they're cheap.

While I hate Monster Cable instrument cables, I really like their ProLink 1000 speaker cables alot! Great sound, and not a lot of money. The new ones seems to be well made, and have a lifetime warranty. I compared them to the Bayou/Canare stuff, and really preferred them, as they sounded fuller to my ears.

I also have a Mulder X-Cable in my Carr Rambler combo that is just incredible. I would like to try their speaker cable as well, but I think you would also need to re-wire the cabinet with the X-Cable to realize the full benefit, and I have just been too lazy/happy with the tones I am already getting with the other stuff! LOL!!!

For my money, the Mulder Audio X-Cables are the thing. He's even custom built a Super Reverb wiring harness for me. Mulderaudio.com.

I tried a Mulder Audio X-Cable in a combo amp and was blown away by how good they sounded. Ended up rewiring my Marshall cab and now use them exclusively. Check them out. Money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. You can't go wrong with these. Gary is great to deal with too.

Not likely. Unless it has cheap connectors or isn't reliable there's no reason to replace it.

Bayou and Lava offer great, decently priced cables. Great stuff.

    BALDERDASH!

Why, of course he must replace it. EVERYONE knows that
speaker wiring, especially in a combo amp where it is
on the order of an entire FOOT in length, is paramount
to ultimate tonal superiority. Attenuation effects may
occur in the 100 KHz region, which will kill all of the
sparkle and swirl. I recommend some Teflon-insulated
788-strand rope-lay OFC 6-gauge for all runs of over
six inches. Note that superior performance can only
be achieved when the amp is oriented with the long axis
toward magnetic north, as geomagnetic flux lines have
a devastating effect on signal transfer when not
properly compensated for. A Shakti Stone on top of the
    cabinet is also recommended.

And if you believe that stuff, I'll be more than glad
to sell you a balanced phase inverter tube...

Well, I ordered a 4 foot Bayou cable. I hope it's good. I couldn't justify spending much more to get any of the other brands.

I was blown away by Analysis Plus speaker cables. I wish I couldn't hear the difference...

$14 (Bayou) or $58 (Evidence)? Hmmm...

I'm sure it's worth it to some people, but that seems like a lot of money for a cable that might be slightly discernably better to ME. Maybe someday.
