Speaker Cables? Does it make a difference?

I have been upgrading my rig over the years, but have never upgraded the speaker cables I connect my cab with. Does anyone have any experience with a noticeable improvement by moving to a premium speaker cable. I have a hard time believing a cables claim of "tighter bass...focused mids" etc...

Am I wrong? Any brands highly recommended?

If you have really rerceptive ears and aren't playing in a band context; maybe.

I'm a recovering audiophile, who, a few years back, had upwards of $25K wrapped up in a home two-channel system. A wife and kid(s) will cure you of that in a hurry.

I've been told I have "golden ears" from some notable people, one being Mark Chalecki, formerly Capitol Records senior mastering engineer, who now owns/runs Little Red Book Mastering. With that said, I upgraded to Evidence Audio's Siren II speaker cable and the difference is barely perceivable when I'm focusing and playing alone. In a band context, I don't believe there's anyone that could A/B correctly the difference with my AC30. This comes from a guy who spent thousands on home stereo interconnects and speaker wire because, I could hear the difference.

I think many of us here are thinking along the lines of the old audiophile adage, that your system(rig) is only as good as its weakest component and that can become an exhaustive and expensive thought process.

I believe that going cheap is bad but your don't have to over due it either.

For example I make my own custom cable using home depot 14 gauge wire and neutrik gold 1/4'' inch leads. I use a half stack so I custom cut the length as short as possible. those custom cut cables compared to a 6-8ft. horizon speaker wire was noticeable. However when I tried a 12 gauge expensive wire that my buddy uses for his pa speakers, my custom wire still sounded better.

Get some good copper wire as thick as possible with some gold plugs and go as short as possible and your good. No reason to pay hundreds of dollars for a 6ft. speaker cable.

14 gauge wire, 10'' length with gold cables from a old instrument cable and you got a decent speaker cable. Although I have never tried a 200.00 speaker cable I feel that there would be a difference but not enough to justify the cost. But that's a hunch.
