Speaker combinations that just WORK

Sounds like you dig those G12K100's. How would you describe them for someone like me who's never used them?

Lots of thump and handle a lot of power, but they don’t start sounding “good” until the 5150 is turned up to a 4. Lower volumes are kind of uninspiring.

* 4x12 with Vintage 30’s on the bottom and Greenbacks up top, ala the Friedman cabs. Killer rock setup for Marshall/Soldano style amps, loves standard tuning and Drop D.

I had a pair of 212 cabs with a V30/G12H30 combination. I could not have asked for anything better.

That's what I have in my TopHat Super Deluxe. The speakers are hooked up in a way that's easy to also try them separately and change the impedance to match. The V30 adds a nice lower midrange to the more chimey G12H30.

Who’s mixing what with what, with which amps and what kinda music?

* 4x12 with Vintage 30’s on the bottom and Greenbacks up top, ala the Friedman cabs. Killer rock setup for Marshall/Soldano style amps, loves standard tuning and Drop D.

* 4x12 with Creamback 75’s on the bottom and Vintage 30’s on the top - this is my go-to for the heavies. The 75’s bring the lowend chunk and treble and the V30’s bring the midrange backbone. I use this with my Diezel VH4S. Loves baritone tuned brutality.

* 2x12 cab with an EVM12L paired with either an MC90 Black Shadow or better yet, an Alnico Cream. The EV/Cream mix is ridiculously musical. Just beautiful to listen to for British amps - with my JMP 2203 there’s so much scope on the EQ; variations in turning the dials are so clear yet easy on the ears.

What’re you guys using when you mix speakers?

I like a G12H30 with an EVM12L.

My 77 slant with the original 55hz 30 watt Blackbacks on top and V30's on bottom is a fantastic sounding cab.

IMHO V30s in a 2x12 cab sound better when coupled with other speakers than by their own

I can't tell any difference between G12T-75s and G12K-100s and I like them both for Marshall, Orange, and Diezel amps.

I was using a 2x12 with G12T-75s or G12K-100 and another 2x12 with UK Marshall spec V30s but I wasn't happy about it with my VH4. I swapped the V30s for Eminence CV-75s and now I totally love that combination. I would have gotten the similar Eminence made Mesa Fillmore FM-75s but they only come in 8 ohm whereas the CV-75s come in 8 or 16.

You don't have any issues with a 200w speaker paired with a 30w? I guess the EV could be a good neutral background for the G12H-30 to add that classic high end crunch they do so well!

I didn't have any issues. I was using it with a custom bassman/JTM 45 amp. Sounded great.

Here's one thing I know a V30 with just about anything works. Of the 2x12's I have had these sounded good -

Weber silver and blue
V30 and Anniversary
Anniversary and gold
Blue and Anniversary
GB128 and V30
V30 and CL80

I've never been a fan of 4x12 cabs with two different speakers in an x-pattern. Far away on a stage, they're fine, but if you get anywhere near them they start to mess with you. Cabs with two speaker types with two-like-on-top, two-like-on-bottom makes way more sense to me because they retain their left/right balance no matter where you are.

For me, a real winning combo has always been Heritage Greenbacks on top for warmth and full mids aimed at your face, V30's on bottom because they're louder and have tighter bass and more present upper mids that balance really well with the quieter, warmer Greenbacks.

But like quite a few others have mentioned, V30's just work with so many other speaker types that you're probably fine to pair them with just about whatever.

Yep, that V30 on the bottom and Greenbacks on top setup for a 4x12 is a classic. I much prefer that over the X pattern too.

Marshall 2x12 w/ EVm12L and a Celestion ceramic w/a gold label. Seems to work fine together.

In the 2 - 1X12 configuration, I have tried the Jensen Nighthawk & Jensen Raptor as noted by @Doppe1ganger : This is a rocking combination!
