People get too hung up on the bright cap
Probably because they’re playing at 2 or under on the volume where the cap is full in the circuit

I’m always in the play first camp but I instantly knew why the 68 Custom took pedals reportedly better than the 65. That warmth and fatness without a bright top end. Perfect pedal canvas.

I am looking to grab the 65 this morning SH as it’s $700 cheaper than a new 65 and $800 cheaper than a new 68.

The amp/Jensen is about 8 years old and it’s been a studio amp so hopefully it’s beautifully broken in and I’ll get a great idea of it from the get go.

Is there a single bright cap or one for each channel?

I did wonder about one of the new Celestion Ruby speakers as that might be good at 35 watts but for the money the A Type could be great.

I have a spare V30 here that I could test.

I am looking to keep as much of the DR clean mojo as possible and just enable it to shine for higher gain. This is not going to be a gigging amp. I have two high gain amps that can handle loud.

I want this are a noodling amp and for travel, small jams etc.

I’ll be honest that I pretty much played my old AC10 with the MV wide open and gain on 10 o’clock. The DRRI 68 was totally fine on 3-4. This is for cleans. The bright cap may be a problem here but I’ll see.

I've got a handwired Princeton clone with a 12" Celestion A speaker and I really like it. It retains the qualities of a Jensen but overdrives better and doesn't fall apart at volume.

I’ve had great experience with a Weber C12N prior to the Emi GA64 SC Alessandro being around I think. The GA64 SC is another great choice.

    True enough -- I shouldn't post on TGP when I'm hungry... :)

Yes, I know high gain and the DRRI is a very common discussion thread on TGP; just like those HNAD Jazz box tones and Randall Satan threads that abound. Dime a dozen stuff that requires some serious thread wading to sort out. You got me...I guess I’m just too lazy to reach for that little circle with the line thingy...I’m 110% chastened now...scouts honour.

Wgs et-65 or creamback gets my vote for the drri.

This will put you in the clear sparkly camp on cleans but you can dial in pedals to sound great as well, in my opinion.

Alnico is also a top choice for me. Beautiful bass response and sparkly highs without harshness.

I liked both the Weber California and Cannabis rex in my DRRI. Put one in a Lopoline 1 X 12 and ran them together or each individually.

My DRRI is 20 years old (I bought it new) and swapped the stock speaker for an ET-65 last year. It was a long overdue change for sure.

It hangs in there longer than “2” depending on the year it was made. They have changed values or at least have used different values for the bright cap. I play in the context of a drum kit, bass and sometimes another guitar. Not loud, but gig volume and the bright cap was an issue.

It’s totally non evasive to clip one side and push it out of the way and the improvement is, or can be, big.

With that said I should also say I have never tried a different speaker (except plugging it into two H1777 cone silver bell Celestions just for kicks). But I really don’t hear any reason to change it. I think it sounds fantastic.

    Yes I understand
What I’m saying is that it’s most present at lower settings that’s why I think people knee jerk cut it out

Bad news (and some good in retrospect) for me...seller did some errr 'testing' and the amp has miraculously developed major issues...so the deal's off. I asked the usual questions last night...any crackles, noise, does everything work perfectly, any marks or tears etc. Amp in absolutely perfect working and aesthetic condition...apparently not it turns out...at least it didn't do this in a week or two's time when I'd be left holding the can...
