Speaker recommendation for Komet Constellation

I just received a Connie this evening from a forum member (Tonefish = good transaction). I have a 1x12 Port City OS that I wanted to use with this amp and was wondering what speaker I should try. Off the top of my head I'm thinking a Celestion Gold, but I don't know too much about speakers or this amp for that matter.

Sounds good with my Greenback loaded 4x12, but one of those would probably blow in a second with this amp.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff- not really sure what you mean "one of those would probably blow in a second". If I'm not mistaken your amp is 33 watts. The Greenback loaded 4x12 should be rated at 100 watts. Your 1x12 with a gold would be rated at 50 watts. Have no fear and crank 'em up. Unless you are talking about taking out 1 greenback into your 1x12. Probably not a good idea.

I guess that last sentence could be interpreted that way, but I thought it would be clear since my thread is about a speaker for my 1x12. Do you have a recommendation?

I use a scumback H75 HP (65w) in a Bob Burt 1x12 with my Connie.

I don't think I've hooked up a 2x12 since finding this combination. IMO highly recommended.

Actually, I use this 1x12 set up with a D13 rsa31 and Aiken Intruder as well, just a great little rig.

The Constellation likes British speakers, just like me. A Celestion Gold would be a good choice. The amp really sounds best run through a 2x12, at least. In that case the Cele Blues would be my first pick, with G12H30s or Greenback second, depending on taste.

Jeff, a client of mine has all three Komets. He's been happy with various combinations.

Connie: H55/H75 mix (wired in series to 16 ohms).

Komet 60: 4 G12M Greenback Pre Rola's, 75 hz T1221 wired to 16 ohms in a slant cab with basketweave cloth (reversed speaker cable leads, as per Hogy's suggestion).

Komet Concorde: 2 H75-16HP's (65 watt models), wired in parallel to 8 ohms (reversed speaker cable leads, as per Hogy's suggestion).

He's using various guitars, but mostly Strats, and Les Pauls with either stock or WCR Godwoods, or WCR SR pickups for the Strat.

He's playing mostly classic rock and blues styles...loud. Hope that helps.

Jim, there might be a misunderstanding here, but the Constellation does not reverse the phase of the input. The 60 and Concorde do, so those two should benefit from the reverse polarity speaker cable. Maybe try it different ways and listen to find your preference.

Yeah, it's my fault. He uses that cable with everything BUT the Constellation. Sorry about that Hogy! I'll go edit my post.

I used a 212 loaded with a Cele Blue and a G12H30 and man what a tone. That's a special amp!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hogie, I'm not sure if I spoke to you or your partner today, but I've decided on either a Gold for my 1x12 or selling the 1x12 and buying a 2x12 loaded with blues.

Jim, I have exactly what you first suggested, a Scumback 4x12 with 55/75 wired for 16ohm. I have to wait until the weekend to try it because I only have an 8ohm attenuator and this amp likes to raise hell. If I like the Connie with this cab it would probably be more practical for me to just pick up a 16ohm attenuator.

So far I really like this amp. It has the feel of the 60, but with more Vox like qualities and obviously not as loud. Attention to detail is incredible and worth the price alone. What a work of art.

Hogy has chimed in here, but when I talked to the good folks at Komet, whom it sounds like you have spoken to, they recommended Blues, and their logic sounds good to me. The Golds, it seems, are very efficient, at 50 watts, and may not provide the same tone as the Blues.

I am currently using Mesa Black Shadows in 2 - 1x12 cabinets with mine and they sound great, but I have always wanted to try Celestion Blues.

Your Connie is a unique amp that, for only three knobs, offers you a huge range of tone options. The tone knob is responsive throughout its entire range. The two volume controls are really versatile when volume 2 is kicked in to blend with volume 1.

Be sure to experiment with your guitar's volume knob to tame this beast. I like to run the Volume 2 at around 12:00 and really lower the volume on the guitar to get the sound of a beast about to be unleashed. It can even sound great with both knobs at just around 9:00.

I would also recommend that you experiment with tubes as I have heard some differences using different manufacturer's tubes.

Have Fun!

The Gold is an excellent sounding speaker, but it doesn't sound like a Blue. I still prefer the Blues for Vox like tones, and to my ear it suits the Constellation a bit better. Having said that, the Golds are a magical match for the Concorde, my favorite modern speaker for that amp.

1+
I`ve been using 2 x Scumback Alnico 65watters lately with the Concorde, just awesome tone!!!!

I really like the Scumback Alnico with the Constellation too, this amp just seems to love the Alnico speakers. But having said that it shines with just about any of the Scumback range.

Thats really interesting about the Reverse Polarity Leads with the Concorde, thanks for that info Hogy, will definately give it a go.

cheers
Brad

Ok, I'm pulling all the stops for this amp. I just placed an order for NOS Mullard EL84s, Sylvania 6SN7 and Brimar 12AX7s. I also offered to buy an unloaded Dr Z Zbest for two Celestion Blues that I currently have.

The amp already sounds great right now. After these upgrades I can only imagine......:drool
