I've built a 30W amp that is basically a Z-Wreck-like front end driving a pair of El-34's (not a quad of EL84s), and I'm looking to find the perfect speaker matchup for it. It is a head and cab config, the cab is a Swanson closed back 2 x 12".

Right now I have it loaded with 2 x Celestion G12H-75 Creambacks, and I am not liking the result. The high end of the G12H's I have in there is too strident.

I'm thinking either in terms of the G12M-65 Creamback, or maybe G12M Greenbacks. Celestion confuses me with their model designators -- what is the difference between a Greenback and the Heritage Greenback?

How do Golds perform in a closed back cab?

Z uses a blue and gold in the Zwreck cab.

Damn that's a sleek looking amp. I would go with 2 Golds. They do okay in closed back, but it would be preferable to open that back up

The Z cab is open backed; I'd prefer to run mine closed. I'm a little reluctant to part with the $$$ for two Golds, if they might also prove strident on the top end in a closed back.

Anybody know what the diff is between the regular greenback and the Heritage greenback is?

I do have an oval cutout back panel for the cab, guess I need to start saving for a pair of golds!

From what I understand, part of the magic of the Z Wreck cab is that the Gold and the Blue are wired in series with the Gold being first to handle the brunt of the output.

The new avatar Alnicos might be an interesting option.

The heritage is a really nice speaker... WGS has a nice affordable clone.

Alnico seems to be what the Dr. favors. Blues and Golds. I've owned the Celestion, Scumnico, and Emminence Red Fang. The Red Fang sounds pretty darn good. Good enough that it makes good sense for me to save the money.

Jeff, the Zwreck-style amp I built sounds really great with Emi GB128s, and even better with the Tone Tubby alnico/ceramic mix. The TT really does well with all of my voxy amps. Sweet build !
