I just opened up my Carvin XV112 combo and found that the speaker is blown (edge torn). Pretty good life for a 20-plus year-old amp! Anyhow, I have NO IDEA about what would be a good option to replace it with....any suggestions? Does anyone have one for sale?

    Thanks,

    Stevo

Try the Jensen Mod speakers. Dirt cheap and a ton of headroom. A great guitar tech named Jim Russell here in Dallas turned me onto them.

The original speaker in that amp is "British voiced". I'd be tempted to try an Eminence Tonker (or Tonkerlite if you want the amp to be a bit easier to carry).

Heck, if you liked the tone already, why not call Carvin and get another one?

    Why mess with success?

+1 on the Jensen Mod, the Mod 12-70 is a GREAT speaker. I also really like the Jensen Neo 12. Its really light and also sounds awesome.

Yeah I'd just order a new one from Carvin....$40 and made in the USA by Eminence. Don't get much better.

Is 70 watts enough for a 100 watt amp?

No....not even close. If you're using an single 12" with 100 watts, you'd be best off using a 200 watt or so speaker such as EVM12L, JBL D/K/E120 with current recone kit, big magnet (80oz) Eminence, or Celestion Sidewinder...something of that nature. 2 1/2" or larger voice coil, strong motor.

Too small voice coil and motor will power compress and lose tone when you're playing...and eventually quit.

It's a good idea idea to pay more now and be done with it. I've got a single EVM12L in a 50watt Marshall JMP combo that I've used for 25 years, and still using it. 25 years ago it was going 5-7 nights a week for 5 years.

This is correct. Let's remember the rated output is the clean power (=non-distorting). There have been examples made of Marshall heads that has put out 180% of the rated output.
