Speakers for a SF Twin?

I bought a blackfaced SF Twin Reverb off a guy on here yesterday, and have spent most of yesterday and today playing it. I like it quite a lot! But, one thing I've noticed is that it has a lot of bass. Way, way more than I'm used to. It can get pretty uh... I don't know, bassy, very quickly. Usually past 3 on the bass. Is this normal? I also noticed that when running a dirt pedal into it, the bass became even more overwhelming. I had to dial it back to 2, and when I DO dial it back, it goes very quickly from too bassy to anemic. It's noticeable but not TOO bad when clean, but after playing dirty for a while, it's something I'd definitely like address. I usually have the opposite problem with amps!

Is it possible this is the speakers? It has one original speaker and one Oxford in it and I've heard that Oxfords and other Fender-type speakers from that era can be flubby/mushy/undesirable when it comes to low-end. I'm thinking, if the bass can be this difficult to tame with my Tele, what will it think of my Les Paul?

So what speakers should I consider to tame some of the bass? At this point I could never see myself turning it past maybe 4 1/2 on the knob - from what I've read about Twins, this shouldn't be the case. I'm looking to keep the Fendery clean sound in tact, so I was thinking something from Jensen, Weber, or maybe the Eminence Patriot series, but I also want it to sound warm/full with overdrive so it can't be a speaker that only excels at clean tones. I have a Pro Reverb at the moment with a 12F150 that I like a lot - it's bright, but not too bright; the low-end is tight but present; and it's got a bright lively clean sound while sounding warm and full with distortion. It also has a Fendery character that's great but can be veiled when you're using dirt pedals and don't want it there. However, I've read that a 12F150 wouldn't work in a Twin because of the 80+ watts a Twin puts out. So is there something that would serve this purpose in a Twin?

Would 50W be safe to run in the Twin? Bear in mind that I will realistically have the amp on 3 or below 95% of the time or more, but I don't know if it's 80W clean or 80W pushed. Thanks for the suggestion, though! If I can use those, that'd be great.

Does anyone have any experience with Eminence RW&Bs in a Twin? I've heard they're analogous to a C12N/12F150/other speakers of that ilk, plus the lower price tag is also appealing, and I've always read generally positive reviews of them in other Fenders.

I'm not sure I understand that link you posted, by the way!

Edit: Went and looked up the Smooth and Slim - it definitely seems like a solution to the problem. If a speaker upgrade doesn't fix it, it'll be the next step.

Well, maybe this is just par for the course, then. A question for both of you: did your Twins have the original speakers, or upgraded more modern ones?

I have 5 bf/sf fender amps... Never get the bass above 2 - 2.5 on any of them.

I'm really enjoying the weber neomags now in my twin. but the 12f150t/A (can't remember) also sounds good

I would definitely be looking at Neo options in a twin. The weight difference is pretty substantial.

Well I guess nigh-uncontrollable levels of bass is just part of the tone then! Nonetheless though, I think I'm going to try to go with a couple 50W 12F150s or a pair of those high power chicago 12s and hope that at least part of the flabby bass is due to the oxfords that seem to be famous for that exactly, and that replacing them will alleviate the excessive bass, if not remedy it completely. That smooth and slim also seems a viable option.

Any other suggestions?

You may need some tone filter caps replaced. They don't last forever. I'd have a tech meter their current values, and compare to correct specs.

This is correct. This is the first thing I would do. I'd have it checked out.
If it's stock, I would change the filter caps, the bias caps & the cathode bypass caps. Check all the other electrolytic caps for leakage replace as needed. Check the values on the resistors replace as needed.
There is a bunch of other stuff you could do but your tech should know this.
Once your amp is in good working condition, you may just like it the way it is.
If not , the Smooth & Slim is a good cheaper way to go.

(BTW, 2-50 watt speakers will handle 100 watts easily. That amp might put out 100 watts cranked., so you would be fine.)

I had a 71 SFTR and I put a pair of Eminence Texas heat speakers in it and they sounded great IMO very versatile speakers.
