    Like the VHT 2/50/2...Anyone familiar with these amps?

    I was reading up on some rack mounted, stereo amps & it struck me that these(the VHT) can handle both EL34s & 6L6s with the flick of a switch.

    Now, excuse my ignorance here...BUT..........is it possible to load an amp like this to run 1 channel "CLEAN" using 6L6s & the other channel "DIRTY" using EL34s and just control the channels via a footswitch???

    I was thinking that would be a fairly tasty amp if you could.........slap a pre-amp with your favorite clean & dirty amps for a little mix & match action!!!:dude

    I just bought a Randall RT2/50. It is midi switchable between 6L6's and EL34's. If you have a midi switchable preamp, it would be a breeze with this power amp.

    Hey Mike, thanks for the answer!

    I just did some reading on the Randall....I like the bias points right up front.

    Does the amp have its' own tonal flavor or does it stay fairly neutral & let the preamp run the show???

    And what kind of pre are you using?

    But ... if you bridge the channels (assuming it has that feature) how will it react to haveing two different tubes? I'd check with a tech.

    Either way, you could also run the same type tubes with different mA ratings for clean and overdrive.

    I can honestly say.......I don't know yet :)

    I just bought it off of Ebay and am waiting for it to get to my house. Hopefully, in a week or two I can give you a better answer.

    I am going to be running a Randall RM4 modular preamp with it, which I am also waiting on receiving. Just bought four modules to go with it: Blackface, Brown, Recto and XTC. I am pretty pumped about it! Bruce Egnater is a brilliant guy and I can't wait to try this stuff out!

    COOL....keep me posted!

    Does the RM4 come with any modules or do you have to buy them all???

    If you buy the RM4 new it does not come with modules.

    The RT2/50 is completely transparent as you can hear the difference between the El34's and the 6L6 channels. If you want your power amp to be transparent I would think a SS amp would be a better solution.

    I actually like power tube color, so I would go that way if I was in the market. (I'm not...just curious).

    As for the RM4, am I nuts or should it atleast come with 1 module?

    $500-700.00 for a module housing???

    P'Boy,

    If you are able to have two differenct tube types per channel on the vht. You would need two cabinets and two preamps. Your signal path would look like this

    Guitar=>ABY switch=>
    Channel A Preamp Clean=>Preamp A 6L6 Side=>Speaker Cab
    Channel B Preamp Overdrive=>Preamp B EL34Side=>Speaker Cab

    The rig is essentially a double mono rig, you may prefer using one preamp and a stereo effects unit to get a nice stereo spread. Which is a standard application for the VHT 2/50/2.

    Makes sense to me:BEER

    That's what I was thinking...instead of running it in stereo, run it as 2 monos.

    I've got a 4x10 cab & a 2x12 cab....run the clean to the 4x10 & the OD to the 2x12.

    HHHmmmmm....interesting!!;)

    Run a stereo preamp mono to each channel & play away.

    Set up works with the RT2/50 as well but you eliminate the ABY switch as the RT2/50 will midi switch between the 2 channels. Or run stereo if you want.

    EXACTLY the premise I was looking at.

    SO....can it be done with a stereo power amp that is capable of running 2ch mono, like the VHT orthe Randall?

    CH1-clean-6L6-4x10 open back-American tone

    CH2-dirty-EL34-2x12 closed back-British tone

    Run a stereo preamp out to each for your favorite American & British tones.

    Yes, that is what the original intension of the amp was but a lot of folks used an open back 2x12 on the 6L6 side and a 4x12 closed back on the EL34 side.

    You can select either / or / both amps from the footswitch.

    The output transformers are custom MM units that can use 6L6, EL34, KT66, 6550, KT88, etc.

    The plate voltage is up there at about 525 so the amp with 6550s or KT88s does push close to 100 watts per side.

    That's an interesting amp there Myles.

    What is it, 6 rack spaces?

    Any soundclips anywhere???

    I think I might have a deal with a guy for a VHT 2502 & he tells me that this can be done.

    They seem like a well built amp too, so........we'll see.

    If I go ahead, I'll post review & fill in anyone else that's interested. :BEER

    I think it's four rack spaces.

    Info on the GT site.

    I have no clips but a lot of guys have played them from the Dead to Jeff Baxter.
