A bittersweet victory at this point.

In a 1999 interview with Q magazine, when asked whether he believed the result was fair, Keith Richards replied, "I'm out of whack here, this is serious lawyer ****. If the Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money.

Goes to show you can be admired by many, have fame and fortune in the music industry, and still be a complete turd of a human being. Sometimes right and wrong is pretty clear. Pure greed.

I am a foolishly devoted fan of George Harrison who by many accounts had super high intensity BS meter in business affairs; when I hear of Klein and his antics I wonder how GH could have ever sided with him (it is possible the Eastmans were even slimier!)

I wouldn't be that hard on Ashcroft--he just used more of the sample than was negotiated. That hardly makes him a "turd of a human being", just someone bad with contracts.

I bet it still makes a decent amount of money on radio.

When you've exhausted all other options, do the right thing?

I don't know. Look what happened to George Harrison with the HandMade Films company and Denis O'Brien.

Somehow had never heard the 'original' ochestral version, have to say I vastly prefer it to the Verve song.

Hearing it does complicate the guilt a hair - Ashcroft definitely used more than the agreed upon six note sample and what was used 'makes' Bittersweet Symphony. Without the Oldham Orchestra sample you have a pretty mediocre Britpop song.

How many notes do you count in the famous "Satisfaction" riff?

So someone cut this cover of some jangly stones song and then some British band produced a song that sounds exactly like this but with singing?

What a stupid mess, donate all the royalties to charity and tell all three parties they can pound sand if they don't like it.
