Just heard this on the news. As if things aren't bad enough for the people in the middle of this ominous major storm emergency threat calamity disaster scenario, the news just reported that there will be TWO high tides today!!! TWO!!!! About twelve hours apart!!! I'm not kidding. Some guy said this. In a big, important announcer voice.

    sadly, yes you can.

    Oh, the ignorance

Did you know that, owing to it's vast size, parts of the Pacific can have 3 tides per day? It's true....

I can see that announcer's brain exploding at the notion.

    a) Tides are caused by the moon.
    b) The asteroid cruising near the earth (2004 BL86) was found to have it's own moon.
    c) Two moons = two high tides.

    :aok

I'm surprised the Patriot haters are claiming this is a punishment deserved.

Hopefully everyone is safe and inside watching the week of the Patriots on TV.

Glad the weren't playing the Super Bowl in New York this year.

I'm waiting to read on someplace like Yahoo.com that the moronic convergence has caused tides to cease on the planet.

did anyone read why the Boston tides are actually in the news? Besides the deteriorated surge walls, the floods this morning and most likely more floods again coming with the second :omg tide that will mix well with the 2ft of snow they got. Also the entire island of Nantucket lost power, this next tide could very well knock out what little power has been restored. Its a real mess.

Please delete this post. It interferes with my blaming the media for everything and makes me feel like I have to think.

A couple of places are being evacuated too. Apparently an 80 feet section of seawall collapsed and homes are being threatened. I hope everyone affected makes it out safely.

    Research? RESEARCH????

Exactly what sort of *research* would one have to do to determine there are two high tides per day? And that the water level goes UP with said tidal swells? Check a book out of the childrens' section at the local public library? Take a fourth grade science class? Watch some dumbed-down show on The Discovery Channel?

Even I know the tide goes in and out and that it can amplify or mitigate the effects of storms, depending on timing of events. Got it. Back in third grade. And I'm about as far as anyone can get from measurable tidal swell and still be located within the CONUS.

The point, apparently still a bit too subtle for some to grasp, is that this is hardly news requiring delivery in a baritone scream. A gentle reminder of the aforementioned amplification should suffice, even for the slowest of listeners. Nevertheless, the media is milking all this so hard the teats are about ready to fall off and millions are lapping it up, right off the pavement.

just to be clear, you are trying to poke fun at the "sensationalism of the news" by choosing a city that was hit WORST by the storm forecasted, then further more picked a benign topic like the tides, not knowing that the 2nd tide of the day was actually extremely dangerous following said storm??
which you would have known if you had paid attention to the news...
    c'mon now :facepalm
    ya can't write this.
