Do I have to get anything special due to where the strap pin is/how shallow the guitar is? What have you guys used?

I'm not an SG owner, but do they, as the Les Pauls do, have two different sized screw holes? I use Dunlops, on my Les Paul the top replacement screw fit OK, a little tight, but nothing a little bar soap on the threads did'nt help, on the lower screw, had to use the old toothpick 'n glue trick!:puh

I recently bought an LPVM and an SG-3 faded special, and I did this:

Wanted to be able to use 1 strap for the 2 guitars, and not have to buy 2 sets of straplocks, but the store didn't sell extra buttons. I simply installed one straplock on each guitar in the front/top/forward button position. (I discovered the 2 different sized screws on my LPVM, and it threw me for a loop also!) I pretty much just play at home, and since the strap stays on the rear button just fine, this set-up works perfect for me.

Every time I've installed the Schallers, I've filled the holes with the toothpicks and wood glue first, letting that dry overnight. Always better to start with a tight fit, IMHO.

you could always use the original screw with the straplocks. I have done that and it worked.

I tried straplocks on my SG and hated everything about them. Now I just use a thick leather strap and the rubber grommet from a Grolsch beer bottle to secure it. Maybe not a secure as the "official" straplocks but I'm not worried about the strap coming off now.

I pickuped my LP from my tech last night, and among other things I asked him to put on a set a Schaller strap locks. When I got home I noticed he used one original screw and one that came with the Schallers. Now I know why (one screw hole bigger I guess)

Straploks on my SG standard work great, as long as the clip on the neck-heel end of the strap is set to face the back of the guitar. Put it on the strap the usual way and the strap gets a really awkward half-twist in it.

I was actually thinking about that last night watching an '03 Allmans DVD with Derek on his SG.

When I have used straplocks on my SG's, I've always put the straplock on the opposite side, or back of the strap....it always made a big difference for me.
