Sub $300 recorder

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a HD recorder. Audio resolution and transferability are most important to me. I'd like to record maybe 1-3 channels at the same time then transfer them to a Mac for additional editing. Any idea's ?

Q: Are you talking stand-alone HD recorder or PC digital recording? (ala PT or Nuendo, etc..)

stand alone unit . . .I use ProTools on Macs but need a portable way to grab ideas and maybe do a little multitracking.

I used the Akai HR recorders a while back when they first came out. That and the EMU Darwin

Just a suggestion for the sub $300 standalone recorders.

Check out manuals to see if their formats are supported/convertable.

Dan,
You'll need some kind of mixer device, but you may want to check out the Edirol R-1 which uses up to 2gb CF cards and records at up to 24/48, with USB 2 i/o. I haven't tried it yet, just been reading about it.

I guess I didn't make it clear . . . ..I have access to all the higher end computer based solutions . . . . I basically want a way (portable) to record band jams with a mic or two or three. Audio quality is most important, effects don't matter.

I was thinking about the Porta Studio 5 or something of that nature.

Korg PXR4 and a small Berringrer mixer. Uses smart media cards and a card reader adaptor for your Mac costs $25. Think Korg have tranasfer software and the unit has a USB connection if I am not mistaken. It also has some GREAT effects and is fun to use.

Since the clocks in digital recorders are pretty close, I wonder if it would work to just use a couple of DAT recorders and four microphones then marry up the tracks in a digital multitrack program later?

Addendum: I wish I had tried this in the 90's when I was working with Chuck Treece.
