I have an old DD-3 pedal, works fine with my Princeton reverb amp.

However, it doesn't sound so hot in front of my little marshall (maybe I just haven't dialed in the right settings). I play mostly clean on the fender, but with gain on the marshall.

Any suggestions for delay pedals that will work well in front of these amps (no effects loop on either amp) ?

The typical recommendation for this situation is any analog delay or digital delay with a tone knob that allows you to darken the repeats.

Mad Professor Deep Blue Delay is especially renowned for going in front of dirt -- it's the only delay I know that was purposefully designed that way.

this makes all the difference IMO. A lot of delays sound best after gain, so running them into a dirty amp is going to mess with the sound. I can't think of any delays off-hand that sound good going into a dirty amp (not to say they aren't out there, just that they're more rare)

It really depends on the amp, doesn't it? Some amps can take almost any delay in front of it. Usually clean amps with lots of headroom. I can use literally any delay in existence in front of my Matchless. Dirty amps like low-watt Marshalls are a lot pickier. I tried a few in front of mine and settled on the EHX Memory Toy, which sounds fantastic there.

Catalinbread Belle Epoch is designed to emulate a vintage Echorec, which were run into the front end of amps, so I'd start there. The Dunlop EP103 is the same deal, it's not out until this summer though. A Carbon Copy might be able to get you there too!

I had good results with the wampler FTE and the pigtronix ED2 straight in with higher gain

I've tried a lot of different analog delays over the last 20 years and my favorite running into the front of an amp has always been the venerable AD-900.

Belle Epoch. It's made for it and sounds great in front of a cookin Marshall!

Actually, I believe the Belle Epoch is modeled on the EchoPlex 3. The CB EchoRec is modeled on the... well, you know. ;)

Oh, and both sound stellar (but different). :)

+1 for Belle Epoch. I run mine before dirt and it's spectacular.

El Cap, AD-999, MLJr or ML2, or the Tech 21 DLA have all worked for me.

The big box Memory Man is also good when it isn't in a bad mood.

Man, I just got my first Analog Delay. It sounds like ass in front. You can only just crack the mix knob before it turns into a nightmare.
