    Different modeling preamps.

I believe the tube power section and cab/speaker are the same.

If you get one they're biased cold from the factory, so check it's bias as they sound much better properly biased.

The X2 uses the same DSP engine as the Mustang series and you can tweak the models thru the Fuse software. The older XD uses a different DSP engine and models, and no Fuse. I prefer the simplicity of the XD.

Having played them side by side, I prefer the XD. Nice to be able to tweak the X2, but the stock presets sound better in the XD.
Mine lives between the clean channel and preset 8. Best little grab n go Marshall I've ever had...
Many of the models actually sound really great.

Some say the X2 sounds a bit more processed, but that may be due to the factory presets, which you can edit thru Fuse. For myself I couldn't say, never having played the X2. Channel 1(clean) and Channel 2 models 3(overdriven Tweed), 7(vox), and 8(Marshall) sound great on the XD and are all I ever use.

I compared these at one point.... x2 has a tap tempo feature, and usb for more edits.... xd had a jazz model that got tossed away with x2 I think.

XD clean channel takes pedals well. Basically you need to replace the speaker with something with more SPLs as the shipped speaker is weak. It's been my grab-and-go amp for five+ years -- might switch to a Boss Katana soon as the next grab-and-go and sell my XD cheaply...
