Trying to decide whether to purchase a Swart Atomic Space Tone amp or a Headstrong Li'l King with a 12" speaker. Help! I'm not able to play either one before buying; I have a feeling I'd like both.

I play a PRS Hollowbody Spruce and a PRS Archtop with spruce top.

Any knowledge/experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

I have an AST-PRO (never played through nor seen a Headstrong) and don't use my Anderson Hollow Cobra S through it. I use my Rory Gallagher Strat or my Anderson Classic...much prefer single coils through it. I find the humbucking-equipped Cobra to be a bit much with the 6V6s. I haven't tried the 6L6s though...they would add a bit more headroom to handle the more powerful pickups.

Both are great amps. The Swart will give you more clean headroom, and more power if that's what you're looking for (18-22W). The Lil' King (12W) would be the way to go for classic Fender tone with lush cleans and earlier breakup at lower volumes. I have one with a 12 and think it's great. You should check out Jim Soloway's clips of the Lil' King:

    +1 to madvek.

i've played both. AST is louder and has more preamp gain to my ear.

headstrong is more classic fender. if you've played old princetons you've heard it.

I played thru both and bought a SFPR. But between the two I would have chosen the Swart.

I have one of Michael's ATOMIC SPACE TONE 1X12 combos
and I just snagged a GIBSON LP-STAND. and it sounds
AMAZING through the SWART AST! It does cause earlier
breakup than SC's or P-90's but if you run it through the
low input it stays clean and sounds HUGE! But I will say
the HIGH INPUT is where the SWART AST really shines with
that CLASSIC 6V6 GRIT that makes you love this AMP!

The REVERB and the TREMOLO are the icing on the cake for
the SWART AST! Strats and Teles sound "SCARY GOOD"
through the AST as well as P-90's!

I used to have a PRS HB Spruce, a BJF Honeybee, and a Swart AST that I put a Weber Blue Dog in. I sold them. Now, I wake up every morning and hit my left foot with a sledgehammer as punishment for selling them. That day in Fat Sound, from the first moment I strummed a chord with the HB/AST, I would not leave there that day without them.

Any more opinions since I'm also considering one of these two amps (along with a pure 64 mean street classic but that's a fair jump up in price).

If you decide to go with the AST I have one that is a few months old that I'm wanting to sell. PM me if interested.
