"on the cheap" means, don't tell me to buy the Gambale video :)

How do you pick the following patterns:

dm:

----------5-------5----------
-------6-------6-------------
----7-------7----------------
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

----5--------5--------------
-------6--------6-------------
-----------7-------7-----------
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

----------5----------5----------
-------6----6-----6-----6--------
----7----------7----------------
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

----5------------5--------------
-------6-----6------6-----6--------
-----------7------------7-----------
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

dm7:

----------5--8-------5--8------
-------6-----------6-------------
----7-----------7-----------
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

with and without hammer on the high string.

----8--5-----8--5--------
---------6---------6-------------
-----------7----------7-----
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

with and without pull-off ditto.

----------5--8--5----------5-8-5 etc.-----
-------6-----------6----6---------
----7-----------------7-----
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

with hammer, pull-off, or hammer AND pull-off and without.

----------5--8--5-----------------5 etc.-----
-------6-----------6-----------6-----
----7-----------------7--5--7----
------------------------------
------------------------------
------------------------------

ditto on the E and the G strings.

That should keep me busy until the next year

Thanks,
Steve

Nice pun!

You have to experiment. There are different ways and one guy will do it one way while another will do it another, you can have good success with different approaches. For example, the first pattern could be played DDU exclusively. Django followers would play it DDD.

Of course that first one is great for alternate picking too. Easiest way for many, hands down would be for hybrid or fingerpicking for those rolls. But lets stick to sweep picking. For more speed you could arrange those notes in the first example differently.

The whole idea is for economy of movement. Be careful, sometimes when you pull a lick out of it's context, it may be practiced a little differently than what comes after it so it's connected and flows. The first example again, You might play the first group DDD and then it could become UDD from there on out. So you can do all kinds of stuff with these things. Many ways to skin a cat.

One thing I would add, is to make sure you are very aware of Timing. And I'd suggest learning all these Licks in 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 Note Patterns, as opposed to Triplets. Too many "Sweepers" fall back on using Triplet Based Licks, and seem to get stuck there.

For that first Lick, I'd probably have 2 different ways of "Sweeping" it.

Only playing it once, or the first time in repetition? DDDUDD

Once it's being repeated? UDDUDD

I was experimenting yesterday, and here's what I discovered:

If I was playing:
-------5------
-----6---6----
---7----------

In repetition, it was "more comfortable" to do:

D* D D U | U D D U | U D D U

* I did the first down simply as a matter of starting the pattern - from there after it's up.

I would call this "inside picking" because I'm coming at the three strings from the inside rather than the outside.

Likewise, with a 4, 5 or 6 string pattern, I applied the same principle and it seems to work best. I'll experiment some more today.
