Hello all, I have a question.

I am looking to get the tone the John Sykes has on his Bad Boy Live CD.
I know he is using a JCM800 1987 [4 input 50 watter], a '78 LP with PAF pickups and his fingers.

Rumor has it that his JCMs were modded by Jose Arredondo..

Anyone know what the monster gain Jose mod is?

    Thanks

john sykes and gary moore are my 2 guitar idols, i saw sykes play in thin lizzy in belfast this year, he had 2 x jcm800 heads, gorham had a 4 inputter slp plexi reissue and used a strat , where gorhams tone was weak, thin and entirely forgettable , sykes was absolutely heart stopping. His solo on still in love with you was the highlight of the show, never ending sustain and such power, his rhythm tones were fat and again, the sheer power of the delivery was mesmerising, gorhams strat / marshall rig sounded well naff by comparison.

i think you are right about the jose mod, ive read real positive things about how it results in never needing to use a stompbox with a jcm800 , a guy i know has played an amp with this modification, he says the overdrive is just sensational :dude

    good luck

    Cool,

I missed John Sykes last time he came through here with Thin Lizzy.

I think the Bray modded amps can get close to the Jose mods, but you are correct, Sykes' tone on the CD Bad Boy Live is incredible.

No stomp boxes, just guitar amp and fingers.

So you say teh John Sykes' amps are not Jose modded?

I can't figure out why some many people chase the EVH tone, that are too many other good tones out there. I agree with you on the EVH "Brown Sound" mods.

I am aiming to build for the Sykes' tone... no Phase 90 needed...

I know a guy who used to have the head that Sykes used for the Whitesnake album. I can't remember who modded it? I think the guy might still own it. I'll give him a call and see what I can find out.

The Whitesnake 1987 album was cut with a Mesa/Boogie MarkIII 300watt head. Which has been well documented, even on Sykes' website. You don't need to mod a Mark III to get that sound. Just John's hands.

    From John's site:

"For much of the Whitesnake '87 album and first Blue Murder album John used 2 Mesa Boogie Coliseum heads. These amps have a Mark III pre-amp section but use six 6L6 power tubes--giving the amps180 watts each! John also owns several Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+'s, Mark III's and some rack mounted Mesa Dual Recto heads. Other Mesa Boogie equipment includes a Tri-Axis preamp and a Strategy 500 Power Amp.

For speaker cabinets, John uses Marshall 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie metal grill "Half Back" 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie 4x12 Recto cabinets and some custom made 4x12 cabinets."

I am aiming for Sykes' current tone.. not his Whitesnake tone.

    His Website states:

    His current tone is incredible...

I will respectfully disagree with that.
I have a Bray modded 73,and it has great dynamics, cleans up great with volume knob and on the low imput it has the best cleans I have ever had in a marshall and will get in the ACDC range on the low imput.
It does have alot of gain when dimed .
It only does the Eddie thing if I want it to.

Mark Cameron has provided John w/ a couple modded heads, considered to be what equates to a "high gain" Jose Arredondo. When it comes to modded Marshalls, John's normal reaction is to strum a G chord and walk away. Evidently John was sitting on the Cameron head for over an hour. We're waiting final word.....:dude

You need a cameron amp... I had a Jose mod 50 watter that is the sound... I think John's are 50's also. I only sold it to get a 100watter from Mark... (p/up this week?) which is an aldridge mod with a clean channel added.

If you need to get ahold of Mark Pm me.

I'm trying to find the photo's my friend took of the show. The amp tweakers sticker is on the back of those 1987 50's.

Did you get a chance to hear it? It would have been done a week or two ago, But we talked and decided to add the clean channel.
