A conversation last night with a friend who is an
actively touring player produced the following
    accusation:

You are dependant/addicted to "boutique" gear and you
couldn't be happy making music with just Guitar Center gear.

So here is the challenge. Create yourself a rig using only
pieces available for retail sale at your local GC (or Sam Ash,
    etc.), if you can.

    Mine:

'54 Gibson Les Paul Custom RI
    '60 Gibson Historic Les Paul
'57 Fender Low Power Twin RI
    65' Fender Twin Reverb RI
    Fulltone TTE
    Fulltone '69 pedal
    Fulltone Fatboost
    Fulltone FDII

Monster cables for guitar, George L's for FX.

    Your turn.

PRS SAS --> Mesa Dual Rec 3 channel --> Mesa 2x12 cab

    I could live with that.

I'm sure I could come up with many, many rigs that would work great. Here's one

Fender Fat Strat or American Std Tele or Gibson LP Std
    Line 6 Crunchtone
Line 6 DL4 or Echo Park
    Fender Hot Rod Deville

The really difficult question, however, is could I stand being in GC long enough to buy this with cash.

Why would this friend of yours give a rat's ass about your choice of gear in the first place?

It's none of his ******* business what YOU choose to play, is it?

Incidentally, I regularly sub in a touring band (they just opened for the Black Crowes) with a bunch of great players, and all of us use boutique gear.

Your friend is a busybody. Then again, I'm a busybody for sticking my nose in. Haha! ;)

I could put together a useable rig from GC stock but I've never been into Fender/Gibson/Marshall stuff. Ever.

It's not so much about being booteek as it is finding something more interesting and personal than what the masses are playing.

Fender Robert Cray or Jimmie Vaughan Strat
    Fender Pro Junior
Electro Harmonix 12AY7 for first preamp slot
One cable - preferably on the cheaper side

And you'd get something very close to my real gigging rig for about a grand.

Dig it. It's a good time to be a guitarist.

+1 ... If I HAD to build a GC rig, I'd do something almost exactly like you Raz. Only difference ... I think I'd add a Deluxe Reverb to A/B/Y with the Marshall.

Another possibility, if it was available on special order, I'd like to add a Gibson Johnny A, since I love the one I have right now!

A LOT of my gear came from GC, so this one is easy.

Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special 1X12
VHT Pitbull 45 1X12 (some GCs carry VHT)
Gibson '60 Custom Authentic Les Paul
    62AV RI Strat
Anderson hollow Drop Top (got it used at GC)

Marshall DSL 50/100 into Marshall 4x12
    or
Mesa Boogie Dual or Trip Rec into Boogie 4x12
    BOSS DD-3 delay pedal
    Korg DT-10 tuner
Steve Vai Bad Horsie II wah
    Any brand cables.

A lot of that is what I currently use!

Dunno. None of my gear came from GC, nor will it. Now ask me to build a rig from Cave Creek Guitars or Noteworks, and maybe I can do that...

RGN, FYI both GC in Arlington and 635 carry Keely now. The 635 had Dr. Z and a Bogner...
