Are tele pickups supposed to be wired in-phase or out-of-phase?

Generally they're in phase with each other, but reverse wound and reverse polarity, also called RWRP.

Out of phase makes some interesting sounds, but in my experience works a lot better with 2 vol controls so you can shade one pickup lower (which moves the phase angle closer - and THAT'S what makes the tone interesting.) With only 1 vol and 1 tone, out of phase sound real thin in a Tele.

Regular Tele wiring is in phase, but RWRP. If you're using a hum defeating backplate system like Suhr or Illitch, all pickups need to be would the same direction.
