    I need a thingamabob that:

    - is small and portable (hopefully runs on batteries)
    - has a built-in mic for voice recording
    - has an input for guitar, along with some kind of preamp to allow recording of said guitar without running it through something else
    - records in AIFF/WAV/MP3 (any or all)
    - has an easy way to upload to a computer (USB/FireWire, etc)

Is this magic box available, or am I just wishfully thinking?

Yes it does exist. It's called a laptop. Most come with built-in microphones these days. Throw in a small usb audio interface and n-track and you got yourself an inexpensive studio to go.

Bingo! That's what I'm looking for. Bussman's laptop idea was nice, but I want something I can carry with me in the car and in my pocket without any real setup or teardown (which even includes opening/closing a laptop). I drive 150 miles per day, and I'm going to be getting a short-scale electric to keep with me so I can play and record song or riff ideas I come up with on the go. The Micro BR is actually even better than I was hoping for, since it functions as a multi-track as well. Thanks!

If you're anything like me you'll be stopping every 200m to grab the guitar...

If this floats your boat, do take a look in the Emporium

    Also, +1 on the BR-600.

A bit pricier, but much easier to use.....

I just can't see how you're going to make that work while using a cell phone, smoking a cigarette and drinking a latte.

Thanks to all who replied. After researching the various suggestions, I decided to go with the BR-600 (should be here in another day or two). I figured it was worth the jump in price for all the cool features, while still being battery powered and portable. Can't wait to get it!

Late to the party - just learned of the Micro BR and for my minimum needs, it seems like a pretty useful device. I'll look around this weekend to see about availability.

    Anyone else using this?
