I'm shocked at people's insensitivity in removing Django, Montgomery, and Christian, putting in Coryell, DiMeola, and McLaughlin. What are we? Animals?
No, just not particularly open minded, historically etc. ;-o

As lists go it's pretty good but ultimately IMO it just reveals the considerable and un satisfying limitations of such lists.

It's a simple problem. There are ten seats on a spaceship. The earth will explode in minutes, but jazz guitar must survive. Nine seats are filled by:

Wes Montgomery
Lenny Breau
Pat Metheny
Kenny Burrell
Grant Green
Jim Hall
Joe Pass
Django Reinhardt
Charlie Christian

Who gets the last seat? Holdsworth, Frisell, Sco, Farlow, Kessel, Martino, Benson, or John Mayer?

Holdsworth. John Mayer gets filleted and stored in the galley refrigerator ;)

I can't name the best because my judgment is obscured by my favorites. I really like George Barnes, Jimmy Raney, Hand Garland, Ed Bickert, Ted Greeene, Howard Roberts, to name a few.

I mentioned him. I would add John Stowell to that list today.

It's shocking to me that musicians can't consider the greater good and only focus on what they like. For example, I don't think Earth colonies on distant planets really need another 3rd rate George Benson impersonator playing instrumental pop (Smooth Jazz) in the Delta Quadrant.
