Just spent the equivalent of my EBMM Valentine guitar on repair and maintenance on the family minivan.

Anytime I have large expenses, I always relate it to gear. Like when my kiddo got stitches, it was about 2 MIM Telecasters after insurance.

New tires on the car = one used SG.

I like how all expenses are tied to their music gear equivalent value.

For some reason, it reminds me of when I started building pedals. A number of musician friends wanted custom built pedals but wanted to trade other gear instead of buying them. It was a guitar pedal based economy; like trading cigarettes in prison.

I'll go ahead and say it. I have not bought a guitar since 2004.

As a general rule of finance, every person should have at least six month's worth of emergency funds in the bank before making gear purchases.

I hear you OP. My Ox amp top box ended up turning into new skylights for the house. Spent enough on stucco repairs last year to buy an R9....and so it goes...

    You know what is worse?
When you go out and blow 2k or 3k on whatever piece of gear, and two or three days later you get hit with a major repair bill for car, plumbing, vet bill, etc.

That has happened to me more than once.

Yeah, earlier this week I had some encounters with the healthcare system that will likely cost me $1500+, which, yes, I would have much preferred to spend on something fun like a new guitar or amp.

    So it goes.

In the last 6 months, I've had to spend at least 2 R9s on water heaters and furnaces, a used R8 on baby stuff, and 2 R9s on vehicles and vehicle maintenance. I've got one guitar, and it is worth $400 max. That's adulting for ya.

    And nobody does.
70% of Americans cant cover a $1000 expense if it popped up.
But the economy should be trickling down any month now.

LOL I've had to spend on a new 2-zone HVAC system, new front door, carpeting and two fender benders in the last 6 months. I could be in the running for Gilmour's black strat next month at this pace...

Used to equate it to weed and ladies.
Now i dont even bother. When i do a good deed around the house i say that was worth $400. I did it for $150.

I put the $250 in labor i saved away.
When i have gas i dont feel guilty nor have to worry about getting grief from
    Mrs 70.
