Since joining TGP, I’ve spent most of my time on this, the “Effects” forum. Lately, though, I’ve been hanging out more over at “Guitars in General” and I have to say it’s a bit more civilized over there. Rarely do Guitar threads degenerate so quickly to angry denunciations and attempts at verbal oneupsmanship the way they do over here at Effects.

Why is this? Is there something about guitar pedals that simply makes us hostile? Just wondering.

There is a lot of anger here. We hate our guitars, amps, cables and mostly ourselves and we will do insane things in an attempt to match the sounds of the voices in our heads.

If you want to avoid rapidly decaying threads, steer clear of the digital & modeling forum.

But in all seriousness, every forum has its trigger topics. Gibson occasionally provokes ire in the guitar forum, and you’ll likely start a riot if you say the word “Vertex” in the effects forum. The amp forum seems ok for the most part, unless the topic is Dumble (actual Dumbles, that is, not so much the clones.) And every so often people get mad at Morgan and Friedman amps. I dunno, it’s always something.

Seriously though, stay out of digital & modeling.

There are a lot more pedals and pedal-makers to hate on. And hate we do!

I picked up a Klon KTR recently and love it - only to come and here and see people making posts about how they are gonna give it to anyone who says their Klon KTR is special. How dare someone use "Transparent" as a description! Max hate to Klon snobs!

    What the ...?

But some folk hate on bird inlays, Suhr head-stocks, solid-state amps, tube amps ... you name it, someone will hate it online. There's just more scope with pedals.

EDIT: And if you are old and like to play a little Blues sometime, don't mention you are a lawyer (I'm in IT!) or wear tan pants/shorts.

Some folks actually come on here to start arguments, but fortunately some of those people have disappeared.

I find TGP as a whole to be far more civilized than Facebook, Twitter, etc.

    Oh, and Vertex sucks ;)

I was looking at an old thread just last week where a gang of trolls were attacking me, two of those folks are no longer posting.

    Too many variables.

With effects, there are so many different types/brands/cost levels. It varies so much that people can chime in on almost anything. With guitars, yes there are a lot of variables too but not as much as effects IMO. I think more people would rather spend their money on different effects than guitars.

Overall TGP is easy to understand. You just have to give up any belief that people that play instruments actually like instruments, gear, or each other. :D

There are some cool folks here that actually enjoy gear and don’t feel the need to put others down. But there is also a group that will go off the deep end about anything, just so long as they can insult others. You should see the insults that arise just over what a pick costs. Honestly some of these folks act as if spending $ on a piece of gear is the most important decision they’ve ever made in their lives. I just hope they aren’t married, don’t have kids, etc. if the cost of a pick sends them into anger land.

I’m sure you are enjoying the current thread over hearing how much a pedal costs. Golden ears, and other insults thrown around of course.

The only way to truly enjoy TGP seems to be not reading 90% of the responses in threads.
